In Belgium, there has been a lot of confusion about the arrival of cruise ships. However, I chose to have my internship in this sector because, after my graduation, this is the industry I want to end up in. My dream is to work on a cruise and sell, recommend, and organize excursions for the passengers on board of the ship. An internship at De Buck Agency therefore seemed the perfect place to gain insight into the unique cruise industry. De Buck Agency is a family business specialized in designing group holidays, events and congresses and excursions for cruise passengers as a Destination Management Company for Belgium, The Netherlands, and a part of France.

The tasks at De Buck would normally consist of preparing cruise calls. This includes creating guide briefing letters, planning overview, checking reservations, and preparing other materials. In addition, I would also be on the quay to accompany the arriving cruise passengers and support them with their questions. But as everyone knows, these are not normal times at all.

Natuurlijk viel een groot deel van deze taken in het water doordat er door de Covid-19 situatie geen aankomende cruisepassagiers waren. Hierdoor was het een beetje zoeken naar wat de mogelijkheden waren. Toch kan ik zeggen dat ik tot nu toe een interessant parcour heb afgelegd. Ik heb o.a. een document opgesteld met informatie rond verschillende rederijen waaronder de grote zoals Dinsey Cruise Line, MSC en Royal Caribbean maar ook kleinere maatschappijen zoals Residensea en Semester at Sea. Daarnaast heb ik ook de laatste trends & ontwikkelingen binnen de cruisesector geanalyseerd en uitgeschreven. Uit dit onderzoek bleek dat veel maatschappijen kozen voor duurzame excursies. Hiermee ben ik aan de slag gegaan en ben ik op zoek gegaan naar mogelijk duurzame activiteiten. Zo heb ik sighjogging ontdekt. Dit is een opkomende activiteit in steden zoals Brussel, Antwerpen en Amsterdam waarbij toeristen door de stad joggen en uitleg krijgen over verschillende hotspots en toeristische attracties. Met enkele organisatoren heb ik contact mogen opnemen en hun contactgegevens mogen opslaan in de database.

Door dit aangepast takenpakket heb ik een andere kijk gekregen in de cruisewereld. Dit doet me beseffen dat flexibiliteit zeer belangrijk is en dat ik nog meer gebeten ben door deze unieke wereld.

In deze blog neem ik jullie mee op reis door Finland. Dit is tegelijkertijd ook mijn reis tijdens mijn stage, enjoy!

Ik ben Annabelle en ik ben 3de jaar student Toerisme & Recreatiemanagement. Mijn stage duurt in totaal 16 weken lang en deze doe ik bij Nordic in Londerzeel. Nordic is een touroperator die Scandinaviëspecialist is en marktleider van België is. Voor deze stage was ik helemaal niet thuis in Scandinavië en dus was deze stage een hele grote uitdaging. Zowel op vlak van wat het werk zou inhouden als voor de bestemmingen zelf was het een grote uitdaging voor mij omdat dit helemaal nieuw was. In het begin heb ik zeer veel opleidingen gekregen en moest ik mij vooral inlezen over Finland. Mijn hoofdbezigheid is Finland voor mijn volledige stageperiode. Toen ik Finland beter heb leren kennen kon ik beginnen met het echte werk. Ik heb een volledige concurrentieanalyse uitgewerkt om het onderdeel Finland zomer te vergelijken met de concurrenten. Hieruit volgde een conclusie. Na deze conclusie ben ik verder gegaan met het werken rond Finland. Ik heb een trendanalyse uitgewerkt en bekeken aan welke trends Nordic nog zou kunnen werken.

After this task, I already had a very large file with a lot of information in it, but still I started looking a little further. I started looking for new partners. I searched for new accommodations and also for special lodging accommodations. I also looked for new excursions. The reason for this is to look for possible new partners for production summer Finland 2022. Finally I have worked out 2 new trips. The first one with theme ‘sustainability’ and as second theme ‘special accommodation’. So these are 2 new proposals to possibly add to the list for Summer Finland 2022. Besides this very big task I have certainly also received some smaller tasks such as: entering excursions into their new app, contacting possible new partners,…

Nordic is zeker een stageplaats die ik zou aanraden. Je wordt er heel vriendelijk onthaald, je leert veel bij en je verdiept uzelf in dit soort werk en deze bestemmingen. The colleagues and the atmosphere in this company make you feel welcome right away. All this together makes for a very good atmosphere.

My journey through Finland may have ended but the travel itself never stops. Let the new journey begin.

It’s Monday morning, as I casually roll onto the Abattoir site on my bike. I can’t help but notice people looking at me. I smile toothless and nod, the classical white guy greet. I’m still not sure if people are starting to recognize me or they’re just laughing at my cowboy hat. I’m hoping it’s the first but it’s probably the latter. In any case I made someone smile so I still count that as a win. I arrive at the service elevator and take it up to the 2nd floor where I arrive at the farm. Passing the seeding- & germination station, I greet some other interns and push on through the glass corridor, a 40-meter-long corridor in between the pisciculture and tomato greenhouse. I love passing through this glass hallway. On the right I can see a couple of thousand plants with shiny cherry tomatoes pushing towards the sun, fighting to get as much light as they can. A bit like people who rush to the terraces after work to get a good couple of hours of vitamin D in their system before going back home. On my left I’m passing the bio-, and drum-filter of the pisciculture. These ‘boyzz’ make our whole operation possible. They turn the ammonia in the fish waste into nitrites and then into nitrates, our core nutrient provider for the hydronic system in the greenhouses. Yeah, we grow tomatoes with fish-poop, and they’re bloody delicious, the tomatoes 😉 Some people react a bit shocked, even disgusted at first when I explain the system to them. But this feeling fades as soon as I remind them that most of our food is fertilised with cow manure. I’ll take fish over cow poop any day mate, and so should you. Pardon my French. And pardon me some more because…

Une fois arrivé à la ferme, je salue mes collègues au bureau et je me dirige vers l’espace événementiel, où je prépare un déjeuner VIP pour quelques investisseurs potentiels. Notre fondateur et architecte du projet, Steven Beckers, amènera quelques clients pour visiter sa ferme pilote. Steven est spécialisé dans l’architecture “cradle-to-cradle” et la conception circulaire, ce qui se reflète dans la conception de notre ferme. Nous récupérons la chaleur produite par les systèmes de refroidissement de l’abattoir pour chauffer nos serres et l’eau des bassins de pisciculture. Cela nous permet d’économiser beaucoup d’énergie et, à ce propos, nous utilisons des panneaux solaires pour alimenter la plupart de nos installations de production. De plus, nous utilisons les eaux de pluie et les eaux souterraines pour tous nos besoins en eau. Peut-être pas tous nos besoins en eau, car je servirai de l’eau SPA en bouteille pendant le déjeuner VIP. Pour cette occasion, j’ai besoin de trouver un chef qui peut venir à la ferme pour préparer quelque chose de fantaisiste et de savoureux avec tous nos produits : c’est-à-dire 4 variétés de tomates, 4 types d’aubergines, quelques variétés de piments, nos herbes aromatiques et enfin mais surtout, notre merveilleuse truite arc-en-ciel. Le défis du chef et de préparer un déjeuner exquis qui convaincra les gens de la haute qualité des produits cultivés sur un toit en ville. Je suis déjà convaincu que l’agriculture urbaine durable est viable. Et même si nous avons encore un long chemin à parcourir, je serai heureux de faire partie de ce voyage vers l’avenir.

In mijn derde en laatste jaar kreeg ik de kans om gedurende 16 weken stage te lopen binnen de toeristische sector, om zo alles wat ik tijdens deze drie jaren heb geleerd in de praktijk omzetten. Wij, de studenten, krijgen een lijst met verschillende bedrijven. Toen ik deze lijst zag, wist ik meteen waar ik mijn stage wilde doen. Ik had het geluk dat het wederzijds was en dat het bedrijf mij direct aannam.

Commençons par le plus important. Actuellement je suis stagiaire au Festival de Flandre de Malines / Campine. Ce festival est un festival de musique classique, avec l’accent sur la musique vocale et religieuse. Au printemps, l’organisation se concentre sur la ville de Malines et la musique vocale avec le festival Lunalia. En automne, l’organisation se concentre sur la Campine avec le festival Musica Divina en mettant l’accent sur la musique céleste dans les abbayes et les béguinages.

Terwijl ik dit schrijf zou ik willen zeggen dat ik een geweldige dag heb gehad met mijn collega’s op kantoor, maar helaas is dat niet het geval door de huidige omstandigheden van Covid 19. Meestal moeten we vanuit thuis werken. Ook al heeft het niet echt invloed op ons werk, is het altijd fijn om omringd te zijn door de collega’s.

Durant la première partie de mon stage, c’est-à-dire jusqu’à début mai, j’ai dû aider à organiser le festival Lunalia. Par l’organisation, je veux dire : contacter les artistes afin d’obtenir le plus d’informations possible tout comme leurs allergies etcétéra. Nous faisons également leurs contrats, un planning et une fiche d’appel par concert. J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir participer aux répétitions et concerts. Malheureusement nous ne pouvions pas accepter de publique. À la fin des concerts, j’avais le devoir de remercier tous les artistes, leur envoyer les photos des concerts et en dernier leur demander les factures afin qu’on sache les payer.

Het tweede deel van mijn stage bestond uit het uitvoeren van verschillende kleine taken, zoals:

• het document locaties Mechelen aanvullen
• de adressenlijst voor de verspreiding van de brochures aanpassen/aanvullen
• opzoekwerk over verenigingen rond meditatie, tai-chi, yoga, qi-gong in de concertsteden in de Kempen
• opzoekwerk over de bedrijven / organisaties in regio Mechelen die een link hebben met Canada
• de concerten van Musica Divina 2021 in de back-office van de UITdatabank invoegen
• het overzicht van de flyeracties verder updaten
• promopakketten voor Musica Divina 21 maken en opsturen

La dernière tache de mon stage consiste à commencer à organiser le festival Musica Divina. Tout comme pour Lunalia, je dois prendre contact avec les artistes, demander les informations nécessaires et créer les documents nécessaires.

Ik zou deze stage zeker aanbevelen aan andere studenten, zeker aan studenten die later graag in de evenementensector wil werken. Het is een stage waar je veel verantwoordelijkheid krijg, en waar je veel dingen bijleer. Het is ook een heel leuke ervaring.

Sinds een 15-tal weken mag ik mezelf stagiaire noemen bij BoardX en ondanks de covid-19 situatie kan ik toch eerlijk zeggen dat het een geslaagde stage geweest is! Of is. Mijn laatste week gaat nu in, nog een weekje vertoeven in het enorm gezellige camp van BoardX, Pine Beach Paradise te Montalivet.
De voorbije weken zijn als een TGV voorbij gegaan waarin ik enorm veel verantwoordelijkheid en zelfstandigheid heb gekregen, top mensen heb leren kennen en in twee naburige landen heb gewerkt en geleefd samen met ± 15 collega’s.

Now, what should you imagine when you do an internship at BoardX?
In a nutshell: a very relaxed and informal working atmosphere, a varied range of tasks with the standard desk work interspersed with physical work, gossip as if you could be in the middle of a Gossip Girl season, helping with the build-up abroad (La Douce France and the panoramic Basque Country) including an apéro after each working day and a lot of independence in your work that they trust from the start.

From the very beginning, I was given a lot of independence in the package of tasks that Kelly, my supervisor at BoardX, had put together for me. Due to the Covid-19 situation, this package was slightly different than anticipated because teleworking was and still is mandatory. But I am especially grateful that my internship still went ahead with an adjusted package of tasks. Hereby: shout out to Kelly for making it a beautiful and successful internship!

Het takenpakket dat uitgeschreven was voor mij bestond uit het opmaken van brochures voor de family camps in Zarautz en Montalivet (van 0 tot een compleet bruikbare brochure), het mee helpen bedenken en ontwikkelen van de nieuwe student weeks Après Surf en Grad Fest, het schrijven van content teksten voor op de News pagina, het samenstellen van de O’Neill kleding pakketten, meehelpen een de opbouw in Montalivet en Zarautz en had er geen sprake geweest van de termen corona, reisverbod, bubbels,… had ik de hospitality mogen verzorgen tijdens de weken dat Bunkhouse gebruik zou maken van het terrein in Montalivet.

Ondanks dat telewerken de norm was tijdens mijn stage had ik toch geluk een paar dagen naar kantoor te mogen gaan in Leuven én vooral het geluk om de opbouw mee te mogen doen in Spanje en Franrijk voor een kleine 2 maand.

As a lover of an informal and familiar working atmosphere, independence and at the same time teamwork, alternating between home sweet home and beautiful foreign countries and varying between a desk job and physical work, I am extremely pleased that I was able to do my end-of-year internship at BoardX. And who knows, maybe I will stay here for a few more weeks in the summer as a monitor.

In het tweede jaar van de bachelor Toerisme-en-recreatiemanagement krijgen studenten de kans om de theorie in praktijk om te vormen en op stage te gaan. After much deliberation about the various internships, I ended up at Tourism Herzele, the tourist office of a rural municipality in the Flemish Ardennes.   Mijn taken zijn onder andere projecten en evenementen ontwikkelen samen met sympathieke collega’s.

Na het eerste gesprek met de collega’s waar ik voornamelijk mee zou werken, Nicole Boxstael en Paul Kellens, heb ik al snel door dat ik bij mensen terecht gekomen ben die de gemeente er echt op vooruit wil helpen. I am happy to know that I will be surrounded by people who show a passion for their Tourism Department and the municipality of Herzele throughout my whole internship.

Despite corona, Paul has a lot of ambition to organize the event “De Molenfeesten 2021”. I immediately plunged into brainstorming about the concept of this event and then I started organizing the event.  De Molenfeesten zouden 14 augustus doorgaan aan de Buysemolen in Sint-Antelinks, een deelgemeente van Herzele. We hebben beslist dat we de identiteit van Herzele en de omgeving moeten doordrukken in de bedenking van het totaalplaatje van de Molenfeesten. Zo zouden we zo veel mogelijk lokale partners betrekken, lokale ambachten tonen zoals stoelenvlechten en kantklossen en een streekproductenmarktje op poten zetten.

In addition to organizing events, we digitize hiking maps and cycling routes, we keep in touch with the restaurants and B&B’s, we put together a treasure hunt for children, we manage the visits to the fortress of Herzele, etc.  De job van een medewerker in de dienst Toerisme van een kleine gemeente zoals Herzele is een job met veel variatie in.

Om alles in goede banen te leiden, wordt er regelmatig vergaderd met de schepen van Toerisme Heidi Knop, de cultuurbeleidscoördinator Jan Hermans, afdelingscoördinator Liesbet Crabbé, diensthoofd Paul Kellens en medewerkster Nicole Boxstael.

Stage lopen bij de toeristische dienst van Herzele is gelijk aan variatie en deel uitmaken van een tof team!

Dit jaar keek ik er enorm naar uit om aan mijn stage van het derde jaar van de opleiding Toerisme- en Recreatiemanagement te beginnen. Sinds het eerste jaar droomde ik al van een buitenlandse stage. Helaas kon dit niet doorgaan door het Coronavirus en ging ik op zoek naar een stageplaats in België. Als gevolge van COVID-19 was er echter geen groot aanbod aan stageplaatsen. Na lang zoeken vond ik dan toch de ideale stageplaats bij Center Parcs Park De Haan. 

Aan de slag

In Center Parcs Park De Haan mocht ik beginnen aan mijn managementstage. De eerste twee weken van mijn stage liep ik operationeel mee om het bedrijf beter te leren kennen. Dit operationele gedeelte hield in: receptie, voorpoort (check-in van de gasten) en het cycle center. Hieruit leerde ik veel bij wat mij in de toekomst van mijn stage nog verder zou helpen. 

After the first two weeks, I was allowed to start at the office where I was assigned different tasks. My first task was to call the guests about the bubbles, but also the foreigners because the borders were still closed then. By calling the guests, I learned my languages better. I had to speak four languages: Dutch, French, German, and English. 

After a few weeks, I got my first project, developing a new kids’ safari route for the park. I started it with great enthusiasm. What this task entailed was coming up with a route, looking for materials to decorate the route, ordering the right materials, and so on. The route should be there at the end of June so hopefully, I can still see it. 

Naast dit project kreeg ik nog andere projecten waar ik met mijn creativiteit aan de slag kon gaan. Zo mocht ik voor grote toekomstige evenementen enkele logo’s ontwerpen met verschillende thema’s. Ook het beheer van de Facebook pagina van Center Parcs Park De Haan viel onder mijn verantwoordelijkheid.

The moment we were all waiting for

In May, we received the good news that, depending on the statistics, the Market Dôme would reopen on the 9th of June. After being asked a thousand times by the guests: “When will the Aqua Mundo reopen?” we were finally able to give a positive answer. This was not only good news for the guests but also for me! Now we (the interns) can finally use the pool too. In addition, all the other facilities such as the restaurants, the info desk, the Baluba, and the bowling alley will also be open. This is already a step closer to a more normal life.

Door het Coronavirus kon mijn droom van een buitenlandse stage dit jaar niet doorgaan maar ik ben blij dat ik hier stage mocht lopen. Ik heb mijn kennis kunnen uitbreiden, alsook heb ik mijn creativiteit de vrije loop kunnen laten en heb ik veel bijgeleerd over mezelf. 

Let’s face it, my first week was hell. I entered a company where stress prevailed and all tasks and files were handled simultaneously. That Friday I even went home crying. “This must be a joke. They are testing me, there is no other way,” this kept flowing in my head. And from the first week of hell it became my dream job that I would like to practice my whole life.

Du 17 février 2020 au 19 juin 2020, j’ai effectué mon stage d’études au sein de l’entreprise @dmire située dans la commune de Beersel. Au cours de ce stage en agence événementielle, j’ai pu m’interesser au métier de manager de projets. Plus largement, ce stage a été l’opportunité pour moi d’explorer ce secteur considérable sur le marché du travail qui requiert beaucoup de compétences différentes à savoir autant de l’imagination et de la création que des compétences de négociation, de finance et d’organisation.

Beyond enriching my practical experience, this internship allowed me to understand that this job is very multidisciplinary and therefore very interesting. The tasks are not or rarely repetitive, each file is different.

And I had the privilege to design a team building for @dmire. I got a lot of responsibilities in this small company, which gave me a lot of freedom in my inspiration and creativity. There was one condition, Beersel had to be put in the picture. Due to my 14 years of experience in the scouts, this did not seem to be a difficult task for me. But apparently there is a huge difference between an activity for the scouts and a team building for an event company.

J’ai passé des semaines à travailler sur ce team building, à développer le concept, la promotion, les ventes, etc. Après 8 semaines de développement du concept, d’essais de team building, de demande de parrainage et de collaboration, mon team building que j’ai conçu a été mis sur le marché. Mon team building que j’ai conçu se trouve également sur la page principale d’une plateforme de team building appelée ‘weg met de baas’.
Mon team building, celui que j’ai créé ! J’étais aussi fier qu’un paon.

The beginning was not easy, not even at all! But with experience I learned that this is the job that was made for me. This is why I study tourism. This is my future. This is my dream job.

Eind mei mocht ik, ondanks de COVID-19, eindelijk beginnen aan mijn stage. Met heel wat stress stapte ik in de auto onderweg naar The Outsider Vlaamse Ardennen. Ik wist niet wat er mij te wachten stond, aangezien het park nog gesloten was. De verantwoordelijke van het park had mij 2 dagen op voorhand gemaild om te zeggen waar en wanneer ik er moest zijn voor mijn eerste stagedag.

Quand je suis arrivé, il m’a fallu un certain temps pour trouver exactement où je devais être, mais une fois que j’avais trouvé Hendrik et Tijl m’attendaient dans la taverne Den Dronk. Ensuite Sam (autre stagiaire de EhB) et moi nous avons reçues quelques informations générales sur le parc et sur les futurs tâches qu’on allait recevoir, malgré le COVID-19. J’avais vite compris que ce serait surtout, au cours des premières semaines, des tâches liées au marketing. Apres avoir reçue toutes ces information, Tijl nous a fait découvrir le parc et chaques activités. Il nous a même dit que on pourra tout essayer pendant le stage. The Outsider Vlaamse Ardennen propose une dizaine d’activités qui s’adressent principalement à des groupes.

Halverwege mijn stage mochten de activiteiten geleidelijk aan open. Eerst was de Cablebaan open, dit is een plaats waar mensen wakeboarden op het water aan de hand van een kabel. Mijn job aan de cablebaan was vooral het geven van materiaal (wetsuit, vest, helm, knieboard, ski’s of wakeboard), en een bandje die gekoppeld was aan de persoon die zijn sessie had gereserveerd. Nadien mochten de kajaks en pedalo’s ook op het water. Hier was het gewoon de kajak of pedalo geven en zeggen om hoe laat ze terug moesten zijn. Naar het einde van mijn stage mochten de andere activiteiten ook open (blotevoetenpad, moerasparcours, escape-room, ect.) maar daar hield ik mij niet mee bezig.

Concrètement, selon mon contrat de stage je devais travailler à l’accueil, mais à cause du COVID-19 l’accueil n’existait plus et toutes les réservations se fessait en ligne via le site web du parc, du coup je recevais d’autres taches. Une de ces tâche était de décorer un genre de radeau qui servira comme ‘Dinner on the lake’ plus tard , c’était une des plus chouettes tâches du stage. Ici en dessous vous trouvez le résultat !
