La découverte d’un nouveau monde.

Au début de l’année universitaire, j’ai pensé qu’il serait possible de faire un stage à l’aéroport où j’avais déjà voulu faire un stage l’année dernière. Malheureusement, la pandémie a mis un terme à tout cela. On m’a dit qu’un stage dans le secteur de l’aviation ne serait pas non plus possible pour l’année universitaire 2020-2021. J’ai donc dû chercher un stage qui me semblait plutôt “out of the box”.

Zo kwam ik in contact met de eventsector, een wereld die ik niet zo goed kende, maar die me ook niet totaal onbekend was. Ik had immers al ervaring als recreant en als parkingwachter. Ik had al het onthaal verzorgd tickets verkocht aan het loket. Achter de schermen werken, dat had ik echter nog nooit eerder gedaan. Een stage lopen in de eventsector leek me aldus een goede uitdaging om met de eventwereld kennis te maken op een andere manier.

Le début de mon stage ne s’est pas déroulé comme je l’avais prévu. J’ai pris du retard dès le premier jour, car les documents que je devais utiliser n’étaient pas téléchargés. Après environ une semaine, j’ai fait tout ce qui était dans mon pouvoir pour rattraper mon retard pendant le week-end. C’était un effort difficile, mais il a porté ses fruits.

Wat krijgen we nu?

Amper 3 weken later liet mijn stagementor (van het bedrijf) me weten dat ze zich zorgen maakte om mijn stage. Ik vond het heel vreemd, want daarvoor gaf zij enkel heel positieve commentaar en nu bleek er plots een groot probleem te zijn … Ik begreep er echt niets van. Ik begreep helemaal niet wat ik fout deed. Ik contacteerde dus mijn stagebegeleider (van de school) en legde alles uit. Ik was ervan overtuigd dat er een groot probleem was: ook al deed ik mijn uiterste best, mijn stagementor vond het helaas niet ‘goed genoeg’. Uiteindelijk kwamen de stagebegeleider, stagementor en ik overeen mijn stage in dat bedrijf stop te zetten.

Comme mon stage s’est terminé sans raison juridique négative, mon maître de stage a plaidé pour une alternative et il a été décidé de me donner une deuxième chance. J’étais extrêmement soulagé. Après quelques conversations avec le coach POP et le superviseur du stage, j’ai pu commencer à chercher un nouveau stage.

Vind je plaats!

Na lang zoeken vond ik eindelijk een bedrijf (O.S.U. vzw) dat perfect bij mij paste. Deze organisatie organiseert evenementen en projecten waarbij een duidelijke link bestaat tussen kunst, cultuur en sport. De drie belangrijkste evenementen van O.S.U. zijn Kroeshaarfestival, African Royal Ball en Black History Month.

Le diamant en moi!

Le titre et la photo me décrivent. Je suis le diamant. Comme un vrai diamant, j’étais à l’origine comme une couche brute et j’ai dû être taillée pour révéler mon potentiel. O.S.U. vzw a vu le diamant en moi, sous la couche brute qui ne demandait qu’à être taillée.

Immersive experience at @dmire Benelux

My name is Claudia and I am 24 years old, born and living in Brussels. I am currently in the final year of my bachelor’s degree in Management in Tourism and Recreation. In order to validate my year and obtain my degree, I had to do a 16-week internship. A total and real immersion in the working world. Finally!

Moi, c’est le secteur MICE-Industry qui me tentait le plus. Grâce aux cours de Meeting Industry que l’on nous enseigne en dernière année, je savais que je voulais emprunter ce chemin là et voir ce que ce secteur avait à m’offrir. Et quelle aventure ! Si vous aimez apprendre continuellement, que vous débordez de créativité, que vous aimez les challenges et brainstormer pour développer de nouveaux projets… alors ce secteur est fait pour vous. C’est un monde qui évolue continuellement et ne fini pas de nous surprendre.

Junior Events Coordinator. This is the title of the job I have been given at the company where I am doing my internship. Firstly, and what I liked most, I am in charge of the company’s social networks. I’m mainly in charge of Instagram. I publish weekly posts and stories related to our sector and the company where I work. Then I help to create all kinds of teambuildings. I also take care of the needs of the clients and put together a tailor-made program for them. When the opportunity occurs, I go to sites inspection and participate in events (best part of the job for sure!). A good knowledge of languages (Dutch, French and English) is a great asset. You also need to be familiar with Belgium and what the country has to offer to its visitors.

Je remercierai jamais assez l’équipe de @dmire d’avoir pris le temps de m’enseigner un maximum de choses en seulement quatre mois. Je les admire de garder la tête haute malgré la crise sanitaire qui perdure encore et toujours. Passer des bancs d’un auditoire à un bureau dans une entreprise est une étape stressante mais excitante dans la vie d’une étudiante. N’ayez pas peur, tout se passera bien et vous en ressortirez grandi et prêt à affronter la suite de votre parcours professionnel.

Cuatro meses en el cielo

“Hola, soy Karen, estudiante de turismo, ¿puedo hacer mi practica en tu empresa, por favor?”

Eso era más o menos mi primera conversación con Inge del Hemelbrug. La llamaba en enero porque mi practica con Intersoc estaba cancelado, y ahora tenía a buscar una otra.

Escribé mi trabajo final sobre el glamping y la sostenibilidad y por tanto Hemelbrug me aparecía perfecte para mis cuatro meses de experiencia profesional. Hemelbrug es un lugar que organisa reuniones y formaciones de equipos (teambuilding), pero durante la crisis de Covid-19 también organisaba vacaciones de glamping. A Inge y Guy, los proprietarios, les importa mucha la sostenibilidad. Me parece una buena idea simplemente llamarlos y pedir una practica. No me arrepiento de esa decisión.

Inicialmente, Inge estaba desconcertada. Nunca tenían trabajado con estudiantes et no sabían si sería bastante interesante. Pero al final me ofrecían la practica. Y creo que a ellos tampoco no se arrepientan de su decisión.

The workload has been very diverse. The first few months the main guests were glampers, which meant most of our work was hands-on; making the beds, preparing breakfast, washing up after breakfast, stripping the beds, washing and ironing the bedlinen and vacuuming the tents.

But as the pandemic improved and the restrictions eased, our inbox flooded with emails from businesses to book meetings and teambuildings, as they desperately needed a change of scenery to boost their teams’ morale.

A lot of our work is concentrated in the back office. I set up a price calculator in Excel which sped up the making of quotations, made some changes in Outlook to improve its efficiency, designed posts for LinkedIn and compiled a list of businesses in the area for us to contact and introduce to Hemelbrug.

July and August are normally quieter months, as businesses tend to slow down over the summer while employees enjoy their holidays. But that is also different this year, and even these two months are filling up with bookings. This caused Inge and Guy to scale back the glamping side of Hemelbrug and focus on B2B. If anything, the last couple of months have been very dynamic, as the focus of the business has shifted along with the pandemic.

Mi experiencia en PiU supuso una completa “inmersión” en el mantenimiento de una existencia ecológica y autosuficiente, dentro de un esquema basado en la comunidad donde cada uno apoya su propio deseo. Cada individuo aquí es un empresario, con un corazón para la naturaleza.

I had the pleasure of empathizing during the early positioning phase, where the foundation for the further development of the project was being considered. A common thread was outlined, with enough remaining room for organic development. To figure out their mission, I had to understand the principles of permaculture and gain an understanding of why knowledge transfer regarding these topics is necessary. To obtain the vision I now have, many meetings and brain storms took place. Where the future plan was in continuous development at the time, we now have three different versions written down.

It is through the continuous input of the community that new ideas emerge, as well as new opportunities present themselves. This is why they continue to open their home to anyone who wants to be part of our life project, in order to continually move forward and become a crucial point in the network of sustainable innovation. The already many volunteers and woofers we were able to receive offered hands in helping to realize the permaculture principles and cultivate the land. Workers of the digitized world, who want to escape the current bourgeois rat race and settle down in quiet areas, enjoy a desk a funky cabin here. The kids can do their online classes and enjoy nature afterwards. Our network of like-minded people, allows us to gather people to organize small events with educational wokshops. This in combination with the ecotourist and stay-the-nighters who, by reimbursing their stay in the form of necessary products or materials, contribute directly to the project.

Los profesores de yoga imparten clases maravillosas, a cambio de la experiencia del fin de semana. Fotógrafos que encuentran su alegría en fotografiar el paisaje, perfecto para el portafolio. Periodistas y blogueros deslizan sus piernas bajo la mesa para vivir una experiencia gastronómica y luego escriben un sabroso artículo sobre ella.

Ik ben Loïc, 23 jaar en geboren in Brussel. Na 3 jaar gestudeerd te hebben in Brussel, wilde ik ‘BXL’ toch nog beter kennen en vooral mijn Frans perfectioneren. Ik besloot mijn stage te doen bij het bekende Visit.brussels. Ik ben er verantwoordelijk voor de Expo ‘Experience Brussels’, een expo over Brussel in zijn geheel, de geschiedenis, de inwoners, de gemeentes en Brussel op internationaal vlak. Ik neem er de reservaties aan, verwelkom de bezoekers in drie verschillende talen, ontvang groepen en veel meer. Daarnaast sta ik ongeveer de helft van mijn stage in het Toeristisch kantoor op de grote markt, waar ik veel enthousiasme toeristen en landgenoten de weg wijs.

Le 6 mai, en collaboration avec le Belvuemuseum, nous avons organisé une activité pour la population de Bruxelles. Les visiteurs devaient répondre à des questions dans un petit livre. Les réponses de la première partie du livret se trouvaient au BelvueMuseum, juste en face de notre exposition. Ensuite, ils ont dû résoudre quelques questions sur la Place Royale avant de commencer la deuxième partie de notre expo. J’ai eu la responsabilité de faire la brochure en 3 langues différentes et de m’occuper de la mise en page. C’était des jours passionnants et faire un livret aussi créatif est plus difficile que prévu. Heureusement, j’avais déjà utilisé le programme Canva au cours de ma formation dans le domaine de la communication professionnelle.

De dag zelf was spannend. Ik moest om 14u10 ter plaatse zijn. De eerste gasten zouden aankomen rond 17u30 nadat ze het eerste deel hebben afgewerkt. Drie uur lang heb ik samen met Alan en Mairon, mijn 2 collega’s, alles voorbereid. De bezoekers werden ontvangen aan de ingang, kregen de mogelijkheid om hun jas uit te doen en werden naar de lift geleid. Eens aangekomen kregen ze een kleine introductie over onze expo, losten ze de vragen op en kreeg elke persoon een klein cadeautje. Het was een succes, zo een 40 tal mensen zijn komen opdagen , wat toch veel is in deze coronatijden.

Meer dan ooit Logeren in Vlaanderen Vakantieland

Of de stage anders liep dan normaal? Dat is zeker. Of het leuk en leerrijk was? Ook dat is zeker. Bij aanvang van de stage werd ik meteen hartelijk ontvangen door het bedrijf Logeren In Vlaanderen Vakantieland. Benieuwd hoe zo’n stage als marketingmedewerker er nu uitziet? Hieronder vind je mijn ervaring:

Toen de eerste stagedag naderde, kreeg ik toch wat stress. Niet abnormaal natuurlijk…maar de eerste dagen is het toch altijd wat aanpassen. Opeens ging het van levendige student met veel tijd en vrijheid naar hardwerkende marketingmedewerker die deel uitmaakt van een B2B bedrijf. Hoewel ‘veel tijd en vrijheid’ mag ik misschien achterwegen laten dit schooljaar. Toch maakte ik al snel de omschakeling. Ik vond het oprecht leuk.

But you may be wondering what my duties were during this period?
Well, as a marketing associate, “writing” is an important part of the job description. In this way, I had to provide content for the Facebook page ‘Logeren In Vlaanderen Vakantieland‘ every month, from March to July. These texts can still be seen on the page btw, so be sure to take a look!
But of course those were not the only tasks in the job description. For example, I was responsible for writing various SEO texts, I did research into the facilities of the competitors, I provided accommodation options for the TV program ‘Vlaanderen Vakantieland’ and I was allowed to follow up on a camping campaign. Cool isn’t it?

Meer dan ooit Logeren In Vlaanderen

En ja, daarnaast kan je wel al raden dat het dit jaar meer dan ooit Logeren In Vlaanderen Vakantieland was. Als je ergens anders op reis wou was er steeds een risico aan verbonden en vaak ook hele dure… Ofwel waren het de opeens voor je vertrek rood- en oranjekleurende landen, ofwel de horeca dat zijn deuren sloot of de alsmaar terugkomende en vervelende lockdowns. Een vakantie in eigen land was dus voor vele de beste optie. Hoewel het logeren in eigen land ook bij ons anders verliep, hebben we er toch van genoten. En die resultaten zijn zichtbaar.

Fun team dates

Although the internship was at home, we did see each other three times in real life. For example, we did an alpaca walk together, we picnicked at the Provincial Domain, we had a drink at the Lock Park, and we ate pizza at the City Park. Lovely isn’t it?

Logeren in Vlaanderen, belangrijker dan ooit

Als afsluiter van de opleiding Toerisme- en Recreatiemanagement liep ik 16 weken stage bij Logeren in Vlaanderen. Vakantie in eigen land is sinds de corona pandemie een nieuwe trend geworden en het meest ironische hieraan is dat het een zo goed als gedwongen trend is. We zijn altijd op zoek gegaan naar de mogelijkheden binnen onze grenzen (letterlijk) en maatregelen en dus ging iedereen op vakantie in eigen stad, dorp of land.

Logeren in Vlaanderen is een vzw dat zich inzet voor de belangen van logiesuitbaters in Vlaanderen. Hun slogan luidt; “Jij legt je gasten in de watten, maar wie zorgt er voor jou?”. Zelf vind ik dit een enorm krachtige slogan en het gaf mij dan ook meteen de motivatie om op te komen voor de logiesuitbaters. In periodes zoals nu is dit dan ook broodnodig.

Ik heb tijdens mijn stage bij Logeren in Vlaanderen mijn reeds verworven capaciteiten kunnen gebruiken en heb er heel wat nieuwe bijgekregen door deze nieuwe ervaring. Tijdens mijn stage heb ik vooral geleerd om op een innovatieve manier ideeën te bedenken die allemaal in het voordeel vallen van uitbaters. Ik mocht hierbij in de eerste plaats op zoek gaan naar online netwerkmogelijkheden tussen uitbaters en zo kwam ik met het idee om “Het Logiescafé” op te richten.

Due to the pandemic, we couldn’t organize events in real life yet, so I came up with the idea of organizing an online bar for lodge owners where they can talk online and drink a cold beer or a fresh made coffee at home. They were so grateful to finally see each other again and to talk about all and nothing. I loved to see the happy faces on these owners due to my event. The company was very happy with this idea and will continue to organize these online bars in the future and I have to admit that I’m actually a bit proud of myself too.

The part of my internship that is the most satisfying to me is that I decreased my speaking anxiety a lot. I spoke to different groups of people I had never met and I made phone calls almost everyday with people within the tourism sector. That stressed me out, a lot. But it got easier every day and I felt more sure of myself every day.

And here I am now, ready for my next challenge, without knowing what is to come but most important, without any fear.

Travel like a local

Building a community together with and for locals is what kept local business from going under

It’s sure that Covid-19 turned all of our lives upside down. It changed everything and it felt like all security was swept from under our feet. But the crisis hit hardest in the tourism industry and everybody dependent on it. Many people saw their only source of income completely disappear. And that is why I have been proud to work for Spotted By Locals in the last few months.

Hoewel de grote spelers ook klappen hebben gekregen, was het vooral bij klein bedrijfjes paniek het afgelopen jaar. De lokale handelaars kregen het overal ter wereld moeilijk. Hier koos Spotted By Locals ervoor om alles wat ze hadden in te schakelen om zoveel mogelijk van die spots erdoor te sleuren.

Spotted By Locals has always focussed on traveling like a local. They have local freelancers write about their favourite spots around their own city. No big or small chains allowed. They have over 500 spotters in 81 cities as of today. They have a large following across all their social media platforms, a following that proved to be powerfull.

Omdat reizen niet meer werd toegelaten werd de promotie een beetje omgekeerd. In plaats van mensen de wereld te leren kennen kwam de focus op mensen hun eigen stad en achtertuin te liggen. De kleine spelers werden nog meer in de kijker gezet dan ervoor zodat zij het geld binnenkregen dat ze zo hard nodig hadden. Ze hebben het zeker niet allemaal gehaald maar de community alleen was al de moeite waard.

That’s what stands and always will be standing at the centre of the values of Spotted By Locals, community. The community of spotters and the community of travellers who want to really dive deep into a culture.

Ik heb mij deel bijgedragen aan de community de laatste maanden door op sociale media en de blog Spotted By locals in de kijker te zetten. We hebben marketingplannen uitgedacht en wegen bewandeld die compleet onbekend waren, maar ik ben trots op het resultaat, and I’m sad to be leaving.

Let’s make a difference!

We all know tourism has a negative impact on our planet and its climate. In a pre-Covid world the number of travelers was increasing, and the tourism sector was growing at a fast rate. This trend will most likely continue once travel normalizes again.

I signed up for this degree because I strongly believed there was a missing piece in the tourism sector. A piece that I believe to be essential. A piece that connects the tourism industry with nature conservation. I was therefore delighted when I was presented the opportunity to start a carbon offset program.

My internship started in March 2021 at a nature travel organization that offers trips around the world, in search of wildlife and all the beauties the outdoor has to offer. It had been on founder’s mind for a while now, offering real compensation to his participants. We sat around a table and decided to create a compensation program, a real one. We don’t believe in tree planting, the most popular method. We believe in protection of already existing areas.

Het starten van een CO2 compensatie programma is geen stap die zo gemaakt is, dit vraagt tijd en energie. Omdat we het anders willen aanpakken dan de standaard compensatieprogramma’s valt er heel wat te onderzoeken. Dit werd dus mijn grootste opdracht, het onderzoeken van de markt en opstellen van audits over bestaande compensatie programmas.

Ook al werk ik van thuis uit, kom ik in contact met heel veel verschillende sectoren, in het binnen en buitenland. Het is een geweldige afwisseling tussen de wetenschap, de bedrijfswereld, bedrijfsorganisatie, NGOs en natuurlijk de toeristische sector. Het is mijn taak om deze sectoren beter te begrijpen en de elementen die wij nodig hebben te gebruiken om tot een positief geheel te komen.

Ook ben ik bezig met het uitbreiden van het reisaanbod dat de organisatie heeft. Ze staan heel sterk met hun groepsreizen, maar er ontbreken nog wat bestemmingen in hun individueel aanbod. Ik heb gekozen voor bestemmingen die ik ken, omdat ik mijn persoonlijke ervaring kan gebruiken, zowel als bestemmingen die een uitdaging zijn.

Natuur.

Maandag, Mechelen, negen uur ’s morgens. Mijn rechterhand rust op mijn computermuis. Met mijn linkerhand houd ik een kop vers gemalen koffie vast. Het is rustig op het Natuurpunt secretariaat. Thuiswerken is nog steeds de norm waardoor de zwartgroene bureaustoelen naast me onbezeten blijven voor vandaag. Hier gebeurt het, dit is de plek van waaruit er alles aan wordt gedaan opdat we ten volste kunnen genieten van de adembenemende en diverse natuur die ons land rijk is. En dat is er nogal wat. Natuurpunt beschermt meer dan 25.000 hectare bedreigde en kwetsbare natuur, opgedeeld in wel 500 verschillende natuurgebieden en vormt met een 123.000-tal leden de grootste en, neem het van me aan, warmhartigste vrijwilligersvereniging van Vlaanderen.

Op het programma vandaag: het uitwerken van een minigids omtrent speelnatuur ter inspiratie van de medewerkers van de verschillende Vlaamse Natuurpunt bezoekerscentra, het inschrijven van nieuwe Natuur.ambassadeurs die de handhaving in natuurgebieden verzorgen, het klaarmaken en opsturen van bestelde infoborden, wandel- en fietsroutewegwijzers en het aanmaken van nieuwe webpagina’s op de Natuurpunt website voor de meest recent verworven natuurgebieden.

À une soixantaine de kilomètres à l’est, le drapeau bleu flotte au vent. La journée d’aujourd’hui s’annonce chargée avec des températures qui vont grimper en flèche et qui pourraient dépasser la barre de 27°C. Le Schulensmeer, the gun shaped lake, et le Schulensbroek derrière lui ont toujours l’air paisibles. La loche d’étang rare, la crossope aquatique, le balbuzard pêcheur et le castor se cachent dans les eaux du Schulensmeer, tandis que la pie-grièche écorcheur et le busard des roseaux ont trouvé refuge dans le vaste Schulensbroek. Quelques jours par mois, je profite de la vue sur le lac de mon bureau au centre de visiteurs de Schulensmeer. À partir de là, je m’occupe du recrutement des volontaires d’accueil, je donne forme à un TOP.Natuurbeleving pour Natuurpunt Limburg, je rédige des nouvelles pour le site web et je suis responsable de la préparation du bulletin numérique.

In het met bosorchissen bezaaide Silsombos, deel van natuurgebied de Groene Vallei, liggen de wandelpaden er uiterst modderig bij. Mijn waterdichte bergschoenen zakken zo diep in de modder dat ik achterblijf met natte, donkerbruine sokken. We ontdekken aan de levende lijve hoe een nieuw vlonderpad hier geen overbodige luxe is. Goede afspraken maken goede vrienden en de aanzet van een offerte voor de aanleg van een gloednieuw vlonderpad is bij deze gemaakt. Ook terreinbezoeken behoren namelijk tot het takenpakket van een Natuurpunt-stagiair.

Au loin se profile un château rénové. Le centre des visiteurs de Kiewit attend une grande visite ce week-end. L’ancien ministre du climat, Zuhal Demir, sera l’invitée d’honneur de la grande fête organisée pour célébrer le 20^e anniversaire de Natuurpunt. Quelques mains supplémentaires pour la construction et la déconstruction du conteneur maritime Natuurpunt, centre de visiteurs mobile décoré de manière festive, sont donc les bienvenus.
