How to stay funkey at home

Hoi! Ik ben Naomi en ik ben studente toerisme & recreatie management in het tweede jaar van de Erasmushogeschool in Brussel. Dit blogbericht gaat over mijn stageperiode bij Funkey. hoe ik het aangepakt en beleefd heb

Het zoeken naar een stageplaats tijdens corona was voor niemand evident.
Na een helse zoektocht heb ik dan toch een plek gevonden dat enigszins bij mijn profiel past. Ondanks ik niet de stage kon lopen die ik graag had willen lopen, was ik toch content van mijn keuze en aangenaam verrast.

The company I am interning for is mainly involved in offering activities and teambuilding events for both groups of individuals and companies. Funkey’s platform has a database of leads with very diverse requirements. For example, you can spend an afternoon laser pigeon shooting or you can follow an evening cocktail workshop. In short, there is a place for all tastes and this is what made it fun for me because of the variation of my internship.

Ik heb een uitgebreid takenpakket gekregen waarvan ik kennis kon maken in met elk alle drie departementen van Funkey. Ik kreeg de kans om bij te staan bij de marketingsafdeling waar ik mee kon denken over campagnes en waar ik mee de verantwoordelijkheid kreeg over de communicatie zijde van de sociale media. Bij de sales afdeling mocht ik meehelpen offertes opmaken en het opvolgen van deals en facturen.

Ondanks ik grotendeels mijn stage van thuis heb mogen uitvoeren, vond ik dit niet echt heel erg aangezien ik veel in contact stond met mijn collega’s en mijn mede stagiaires waardoor de communicatie heel vlot liep.

As an intern, I got a lot of responsibility and this gave me the feeling that I am a real asset within the company. I can honestly say that I really got to know myself during my internship and that this period led to great professional growth.

Beethoven op de maan

The long awaited internship, turned out a bit differently than we all expected. 2020 has somehow been a good year for me, except maybe my name is a bit unfortunate these days. Because I’m so passionate about classical music, it wasn’t a difficult choice for me to complete my internship at The Festival of Flanders Mechelen/Kempen. Every year this incredible team organizes two festivals for classical music: Lunalia and Musica Divina.

Stokman & Vos tijdens het Hoogste Beethovenconcert

Een van de hoogtepunten was zonder twijfel het ‘Hoogste Beethovenconcert’, dat begin maart plaats vond. Dit jaar wordt er 250 jaar Beethoven gevierd, en ook het programma van Lunalia zou dit jaar ‘Beethoven op de maan’ geweest zijn. Het hoogste Beethovenconcert was al een waanzinnig voorproefje met Stokman & Vos. Het concert ging door, boven in de Sint-Romboutstoren in Mechelen en waren ongeveer zo een 500 trappen omhoog.

Unfortunately after two weeks we decided to work from home, as corona became more serious. A few weeks later there was no other option but to cancel Lunalia 2020. No ‘Beethoven op de maan’. Working from home was everything but easy, distraction is everywhere. I found it incredibly difficult to find balance between work and home. I had to teach myself a new structure, and believe me, structure is not my talent. But, I don’t see this quarantaine necessarily as something negative. Being at home obligates you to take time for yourself, and do things you want to do. Maybe I came out of this quarantaine a bit too relaxed.

Hoe veel deugd ik ook aan de quarantaine heb gehad, ik was dolblij om terug naar Mechelen te gaan. Het was half mei ongeveer dat we terug drie dagen in de week op het kantoor mochten werken, waar ik natuurlijk dolgelukkig om was. Musica Divina komt ondertussen ook dichter bij en de voorbereidingen zijn volop aan de gang. Dit jaar heeft Musica Divina toevallig een toepasselijk motto, ‘Zuurstof voor de Ziel’.

Every day I get to the office with a smile on my face and I’m thankful I get to stay a few weeks longer. I didn’t just learn about production, I discovered so many new artists, ensembles and music. I’ve been able to do something I would love to do in the future. To sum up, this internship has been nothing else but an amazing experience.

Cuatro meses en el cielo

“Hola, soy Karen, estudiante de turismo, ¿puedo hacer mi practica en tu empresa, por favor?”

Eso era más o menos mi primera conversación con Inge del Hemelbrug. La llamaba en enero porque mi practica con Intersoc estaba cancelado, y ahora tenía a buscar una otra.

Escribé mi trabajo final sobre el glamping y la sostenibilidad y por tanto Hemelbrug me aparecía perfecte para mis cuatro meses de experiencia profesional. Hemelbrug es un lugar que organisa reuniones y formaciones de equipos (teambuilding), pero durante la crisis de Covid-19 también organisaba vacaciones de glamping. A Inge y Guy, los proprietarios, les importa mucha la sostenibilidad. Me parece una buena idea simplemente llamarlos y pedir una practica. No me arrepiento de esa decisión.

Inicialmente, Inge estaba desconcertada. Nunca tenían trabajado con estudiantes et no sabían si sería bastante interesante. Pero al final me ofrecían la practica. Y creo que a ellos tampoco no se arrepientan de su decisión.

The workload has been very diverse. The first few months the main guests were glampers, which meant most of our work was hands-on; making the beds, preparing breakfast, washing up after breakfast, stripping the beds, washing and ironing the bedlinen and vacuuming the tents.

But as the pandemic improved and the restrictions eased, our inbox flooded with emails from businesses to book meetings and teambuildings, as they desperately needed a change of scenery to boost their teams’ morale.

A lot of our work is concentrated in the back office. I set up a price calculator in Excel which sped up the making of quotations, made some changes in Outlook to improve its efficiency, designed posts for LinkedIn and compiled a list of businesses in the area for us to contact and introduce to Hemelbrug.

July and August are normally quieter months, as businesses tend to slow down over the summer while employees enjoy their holidays. But that is also different this year, and even these two months are filling up with bookings. This caused Inge and Guy to scale back the glamping side of Hemelbrug and focus on B2B. If anything, the last couple of months have been very dynamic, as the focus of the business has shifted along with the pandemic.

Mi experiencia en PiU supuso una completa “inmersión” en el mantenimiento de una existencia ecológica y autosuficiente, dentro de un esquema basado en la comunidad donde cada uno apoya su propio deseo. Cada individuo aquí es un empresario, con un corazón para la naturaleza.

I had the pleasure of empathizing during the early positioning phase, where the foundation for the further development of the project was being considered. A common thread was outlined, with enough remaining room for organic development. To figure out their mission, I had to understand the principles of permaculture and gain an understanding of why knowledge transfer regarding these topics is necessary. To obtain the vision I now have, many meetings and brain storms took place. Where the future plan was in continuous development at the time, we now have three different versions written down.

La filosofía de Piu dice: “En Piu, hacemos las cosas de forma diferente. Con un enfoque innovador y creativo, experimentamos en busca de soluciones alternativas a viejos problemas. It is through the continuous input of the community that new ideas emerge, as well as new opportunities present themselves. This is why they continue to open their home to anyone who wants to be part of our life project, in order to continually move forward and become a crucial point in the network of sustainable innovation. The already many volunteers and woofers we were able to receive offered hands in helping to realize the permaculture principles and cultivate the land. Workers of the digitized world, who want to escape the current bourgeois rat race and settle down in quiet areas, enjoy a desk a funky cabin here. The kids can do their online classes and enjoy nature afterwards. Our network of like-minded people, allows us to gather people to organize small events with educational wokshops. This in combination with the ecotourist and stay-the-nighters who, by reimbursing their stay in the form of necessary products or materials, contribute directly to the project.

Los profesores de yoga imparten clases maravillosas, a cambio de la experiencia del fin de semana. Fotógrafos que encuentran su alegría en fotografiar el paisaje, perfecto para el portafolio. Periodistas y blogueros deslizan sus piernas bajo la mesa para vivir una experiencia gastronómica y luego escriben un sabroso artículo sobre ella.

Travel like a local

Building a community together with and for locals is what kept local business from going under

It’s sure that Covid-19 turned all of our lives upside down. It changed everything and it felt like all security was swept from under our feet. But the crisis hit hardest in the tourism industry and everybody dependent on it. Many people saw their only source of income completely disappear. And that is why I have been proud to work for Spotted By Locals in the last few months.

Hoewel de grote spelers ook klappen hebben gekregen, was het vooral bij klein bedrijfjes paniek het afgelopen jaar. De lokale handelaars kregen het overal ter wereld moeilijk. Hier koos Spotted By Locals ervoor om alles wat ze hadden in te schakelen om zoveel mogelijk van die spots erdoor te sleuren.

Spotted By Locals has always focussed on traveling like a local. They have local freelancers write about their favourite spots around their own city. No big or small chains allowed. They have over 500 spotters in 81 cities as of today. They have a large following across all their social media platforms, a following that proved to be powerfull.

Omdat reizen niet meer werd toegelaten werd de promotie een beetje omgekeerd. In plaats van mensen de wereld te leren kennen kwam de focus op mensen hun eigen stad en achtertuin te liggen. De kleine spelers werden nog meer in de kijker gezet dan ervoor zodat zij het geld binnenkregen dat ze zo hard nodig hadden. Ze hebben het zeker niet allemaal gehaald maar de community alleen was al de moeite waard.

That’s what stands and always will be standing at the centre of the values of Spotted By Locals, community. The community of spotters and the community of travellers who want to really dive deep into a culture.

Ik heb mij deel bijgedragen aan de community de laatste maanden door op sociale media en de blog Spotted By locals in de kijker te zetten. We hebben marketingplannen uitgedacht en wegen bewandeld die compleet onbekend waren, maar ik ben trots op het resultaat, and I’m sad to be leaving.

Admiring admire

@dmire, an event office where I learned a lot.

Je travaille déjà pour @dmire depuis mars 2020. Ce qui veut dire que j’y ai travailler toute la période du covid. Je voyais la réalité en face. Ce n’étais pas facile. L’année passée en mars mes 2 collègues sont parties pour de raisons personnels. Mais surtout Robin, un collègue sur qui je savais compter quand il y avait quoi que ce soit, lui aussi et parti après 9 longs mois de chômage technique. Pour finir j’étais la seule à travailler pour les 2 patrons. J’avais donc beaucoup de responsabilité, mais surtout je voyais et comprenais tous les problèmes donc ils ont dû faire face à cause de cette crise sanitaire. Je les admire beaucoup pour être rester positif avec la tête haute et de trouver d’autres idées encore plus innovatif et branché que jamais.

Beside that I worked my ass off. Sorry for the expression but it truly is. Working a 9 to 5 in the event industry? Impossible! I worked part-time in the vaccination center that @dmire organised together with the municipality of Beersel. The hours were from 8h45 till 13h and from 15h45 till 20h. I almost felt obliged to continue working on the other files of admire during my break because I was responsible for the requests we received for teambuildings via “Wegmetdebaas.be” and otherwise the price quotes were not sent quickly enough. During my break I called customers, contacted suppliers and replied to the hundreds of mails I receive every day. I worked almost 12 hours a day. But it was all worth it.

En plus de toutes les tâches que j’ai eu à accomplir, on m’a confié la responsabilité de créer un teambuilding avec le thème central de « Lambic ». Pour être très honnête, je n’avais encore jamais lu un Bob et Bobette et je n’avais encore jamais gouté une bière lambic. J’avais la pression car l’année passé dans mon stage de 2ième année j’ai aussi eu l’opportunité de créer un teambuilding « Les détectives en forme » et les patrons étaient tellement contents et fières de moi. Je devais donc faire aussi bien ou même mieux ! Cependant l’année passée j’y travaillais full time et cette année j’ai travaillé seulement mi-temps pour les tâches pour admire. J’avais donc beaucoup moins de temp ! J’ai dû utiliser ma créativité, mon perfectionnisme, mon attention au détail et j’ai même dû sortir mon coté économique (que je n’ai absolument pas) pour savoir faire un calcul des coûts.

I do admire @dmire a lot and I will always be thankful for everything they have taught me and made me ready to work in the MICE sector.

Always golden hour at the Golden Lakes Resort

At the reception of the Golden Lakes, we manage the village and the hotel. Every day we welcome people from all around the world especially Europe. Together with my colleagues we give all the information about what people can do, where they can eat, and listen to their needs. It’s obviously a perfect place to get away from the loud city centres and to finally take a breath by the breath-taking lakes of L’Eau d’Heure.

My favourite part of the internship is being able to open the door of my house in the park and feel as if I was on a holiday. Where the internship didn’t feel like work or an obligation.

Mijn dagelijkse taken zijn dezelfde, maar elke dag ziet er anders uit. Elke dag zijn er ook nieuwe uitdagingen: hoeveel aankomsten, is alle informatie goed doorgegeven, communicatie met het restaurant en housekeeping, contente gasten, gasten waarvan de verwachtingen niet werden vervuld, …. Er is altijd nieuwe informatie die we zeer snel moeten verwerken en deze direct moeten toepassen.

Een ander aspect dat ik wil aanhalen en dat me echt zal bijblijven wanneer ik weg ben is hoe goed mijn medestagiaires en collega’s me hebben ontvangen van begin tot einde.

Het was altijd een plezier om naar mijn stageplaats te gaan en mijn dag te beginnen met een warm welkom van mijn collega’s.

En tant qu’étudiante en gestion du tourisme et management en récréation, je fais mon stage au Golden Lakes Resort. Composé d’un village et un hôtel cet endroit offre un stage constructif dans un cadre paradisiaque.

L’éxperience

Ten eerste haalt het je uit je comfort zone. Dit is wat er van jou wordt verwacht als receptioniste van de Golden Lakes.

Chaque jour, on vient travailler et on est le premier contact avec le client. Que le client soit stressé, heureux, mécontent, … c’est à nous de faire en sorte que le client se sente le mieux possible en étant à leur écoute.

Le personnel fait en sorte qu’on se sente épanouis dans notre stage. Ils ont fait preuve de patience et de bienveillance avec moi. Ils étaient toujours patients en répondant à mes questions.

Ce stage a été très enrichissant personnellement. J’ai pu travailler avec des personnes qui aiment leur travail. Petit à petit, ils m’ont fait confiance, ce qui m’a permis de monter en compétences afin d’être totalement autonome.

Être autonome est primordial, car nous sommes tous les jours en contact avec d’autres services, nous devons assurer le bon déroulement.

De omgeving

Tijdens deze stage krijg je de kans om te verblijven in een van de villa’s van het domein. Dit geeft je de mogelijkheid om een echte ervaring in het Golden Lakes Resort te beleven. Je wordt omringd door 18 hectare bos. Of je nu van de natuur houdt of van wateractiviteiten, er is voor elk wat wils. Meer dan 25 activiteiten worden aangeboden rond het Golden Lakes Village: Golf, wandelen, vissen, boomklimmen, waterskiën, jet club, mini club… Het voordeel van een plaats als deze is dat het merendeel van de activiteiten buiten plaatsvindt. Met inachtneming van de geldende hygiënemaatregelen kan je profiteren van de grote natuurlijke ruimten die het gebied biedt om deel te nemen aan activiteiten in de open lucht.

Si vous voulez vivre un stage qui vous permet d’évoluer tant personnellement que professionnellement parlant je vous conseille vraiment de faire votre stage au sein du Golden.

Auf der Suche nach jüdischer Kultur und Geschichte im polnischen Galizien

Was habe ich für vier wunderschöne Monate gehabt! In diesem Blogpost fliegen wir nach Osten, in das Land von Wodka und Zapiekanka, von Kopernikus und Papst Johannes Paul II., Von Bernstein und Blumenkränzen. Vielleicht haben Sie es erraten: ich habe mein Praktikum in Polen gemacht, in Krakau, um genau zu sein. Was wir jedoch nicht unmittelbar mit diesem Land verbinden, ist das Judentum. Mit einem gesunden Interesse an Geschichte, Kultur und Osteuropa fiel meine Wahl schnell auf das Jüdisches Museum Galizien. Im Folgenden erzähle ich Ihnen mehr über meine Zeit als Praktikantin.

Meine letzte Führung im Museum… ich werde es hier vermissen!

Moim głównym zdaniem jako praktykanta jest oprowadzanie grup szkolnych po muzeum. Podczas oprowadzania uczniowie uczą się nie tylko o Holokauście. Katastrofa, którą był Holokaust nie oznacza początku, ani końca żydowskiej historii i kultury. Żydzi już w średniowieczu byli zachęcani do osiedlania się w Polsce, między innymi poprzez uzyskanie prawa do samorządności i wolności religijnej. W XVI wieku Polska stała się ważnym ośrodkiem żydowskiego życia i centrum wiedzy o tej religii. Na początku XX wieku Polska społeczność żydowska była największa na świecie. Nawet dzisiaj następuje ożywienie kulturowe poprzez centra kulturowe, atrakcje turystyczne, festiwale, badania naukowe itp.

Der Holocaust sollte jedoch niemals vergessen werden. Das Museum lädt deshalb Menschen ein, die diese schrecklichen Zeiten überlebt haben. Es ist die letzte Generation von Überlebenden, die uns mehr über die miserablen Umstände, unter denen sie in den Konzentrationslagern und im Ghetto lebten, und über den Wiederaufbau ihres Lebens nach dem Holocaust erzählen kann. Es ist unsere Aufgabe als Praktikanten, den Schülern weitere Informationen zu diesen Ereignissen zu geben.

Drugą funkcją, którą wykonuję jest praca w charakterze recepcjonistki. Ta praca wymaga nie tylko przyjmowania gości i wydawania im biletów na wystawy. Jako recepcjonistka pełnię także funkcję punktu informacyjnego dla przechodniów, pomagam odwiedzającym odnaleźć dorgę w Krakowie i przekazuje im więcej informacji o mieście. Ponadto kieruje grupy przychodzące do muzeum we właściwe miejsce, utrzymuje kontakt z innymi działami muzeum i przechowuje dane finansowe. Wreszcie, wraz z moimi kolegami, organizuję również wydarzenia takie jak „Slow Art Day” czy gry miejskiej jak „Discovering Jewish Life”.

Besonders lehrreich war nicht nur das Praktikum, sondern auch alle damit verbundenen Aktivitäten. Ich habe zum Beispiel das jüdische Erbe im polnischen Galizien durch die sogenannte Shtetl Tour (ein Tagesausflug) kennengelernt. Darüber hinaus habe ich genügend Freizeit gehabt, um Krakau und seine Umgebung zu erkunden.

Twee maanden en half vakantie?

Tijdens mijn stage bij Odalys Saint Loup sta ik niet enkel in voor de vakantie van anderen, maar heb ik ook zelf het gevoel alsof ik elke dag op vakantie ben.

“La plage est environt dix minutes à pied.” Deze zin zeg ik hier dagelijks, dit doet me dan telkens beseffen dat ik slechts op 800 meter van het strand woon.

Stage lopen bij Odalys Saint-Loup is één van de betere keuzes die ik al in mijn leven heb gemaakt. Elke dag sta ik op en heb ik het gevoel dat ik op vakantie ben. Dit zorgt er voor dat ik met veel plezier achter de receptie sta.

Ma journée de travail commence à 9h30 et se termine à 19h00. Au cours de la journée, il y a différentes tâches que je dois accomplir. Je dois faire le check-in et le check-out, je contrôle si les appartements sont propres, je réponds toutes les questions. Et tout ça avec un grand sourire! Chaque jour est différent, car chaque jour je rencontre d’autres personnes à la réception.

Tijdens mijn stage heb ik niet enkel de werking van een residentie leren kennen, maar ook mijn kennis van Frans is er elke dag op vooruit gegaan. In het begin durfde ik amper te spreken, nu staat mijn mond bijna niet meer stil.

Le Cap d’Agde est aussi un endroit idéal pour vivre quelques mois. Chaque semaine, il y a des choses à faire. Par exemple, il y a Vinocap (la fête du vin), la fête de la musique et bien plus encore.

Le Cap is een leuke havenstad, heeft verschillende leuke stranden mét strandbars en gezellige restaurants. Het is ook de perfecte uitvalbasis voor enkele uitstappen in de buurt. Zo ben ik tijdens mijn stage reeds naar Montpellier, Sète, Pont du Gard en Pezenas geweest. Stuk voor stuk leuke en prachtige plaatsen in Frankrijk. Door al deze bezoeken is mijn liefde voor het land sterk gegroeid.

Niet enkel de omgeving is leuk, ook de residentie Saint Loup heeft zijn charmes. Zo is er een gezellige bar en restaurant, maar de grootste troef is het gigantsische zwembad, waar ik tijdens mijn drie uur durende middagpauze te vinden ben!
