Mijn leven als stagiaire in Madrid als DMC

Hallo allemaal mijn naam is Valerie en ik ben momenteel op stage in Madrid. Momenteel zit ik in mijn voorlaatste week stage en ik vind het hier nog steeds fantastisch. If you ever come to Madrid on vacation or will do your internship here I definitely recommend the neighborhood La Latina in the center, it is a fantastic neighborhood with a big market in front of your door every Sunday full of hippie and second hand clothes.

But now let me tell you about my internship. The first week I was here I already had the chance to go with my work to the beautiful famous castle ‘Castillo de Viñuelas, daar vond een diner plaats vol internationale mensen van over heel de wereld. I got to walk around with them and see how everything was going, and I also had the chance to eat with the staff we hire to keep the event running smoothly. We kregen een mooiere plek dan waar het diner van de business mensen plaatsvond, lucky me. Maar voor dit alles ben ik eerst met mijn collega mee gegaan naar het Marriott hotel waar de internationale mensen van het bedrijf een bespreking hadden in een van de congress zalen. Then we made sure that all the people got on the buses properly and then we drove to the castle with the bus. What a wonderful evening.

Oke, nu naar het echte werk op de werkplek zelf. Dat is eigelijk heel de dag computer werk, de eerste paar weken was ik bezig met nieuwe powerpoint maken voor de ‘restaurants’, ‘venues’ en ‘activiteiten’ die wij aanbieden en het verbeteren van de engelse teksten van die powerpoints. Dit was een beetje saai maar tussendoor mocht ik wel soms een grote verantwoordelijke taak volbrengen, de prijzen van de facturen in ons programma ingeven. I also had to find new suppliers who might be potential for our next event, I had to contact them by phone and email. It was a very nice task to look for new suppliers myself. De volgende drie maanden mocht ik meer meewerken aan projecten en meegaan naar events. Het werk is sommige dagen hetzelfde maar andere dagen weer heel variërend. Je krijgt elke dag nieuwe taken van de collega’s en ik had ook de kans om zelf een powerpoint presentatie te maken voor de Amerikaanse markt.

WAH event in IFEMA gebouw met het werk

Tijdens mijn eerste maand had ik de kans om mee te gaan als vip naar WAH dat doorgaat in het IFEMA gebouw. Dit was een show dat volledig rond muziek draaiden. Onze collega had daar in maart een grote groep binnen gekregen en daarvoor waren we uitgenodigd door de organisatie van WAH zelf. We kregen zelfs de beste tafels die er waren. Die avond ga ik nooit vergeten, dit was de beste show die ik in heel mijn leven gezien heb, onbeschrijfelijk.

We have now come to my penultimate week of internship, and it has flown by. Which is a very good sign. I really recommend Madrid to do your internship, the city is so beautiful. Ik ga met spijt naar huis.

Opnieuw verliefd op de reisindustrie

Corona heeft een heel grote impact gehad op ons leven de afgelopen jaren. De reisindustrie was hierdoor enorm getroffen. In deze tijd toerisme studeren was alvast een aparte ervaring. Om eerlijk te zijn was ik hierdoor de motivatie en liefde grotendeels verloren voor mijn richting. Op het einde van mijn studies, vooraleer ik begon aan mijn laatste stage, was ik zelfs niet meer zeker of ik ooit in de reisindustrie zou willen werken. Mijn stage bij Nordic heeft mijn passie voor reizen en de toeristische sector opnieuw laten opleven. Ik neem deze eerste werkervaring voor de rest van mijn professionele carrière mee.

During the past few months I have had the opportunity to do an internship with the specialist of the far north, the niche touroperator Nordic. I supported team Winter as an intern Travel Designer. My main task was to listen to the customers’ wishes and guide them along to their dream trip to Lapland. We follow-up the customer from the first contact until they leave on their vacation. In the process, I learned to communicate professionally via email and the phone. I was an information point where customers could go to for their questions. I also checked the online bookings and I’m keeping contact with our partners to arrange everything. My tasks remained broadly the same, namely sales of the vacations, but every customer is so different so you learn something new every day.

Ik heb niet enkel een mooie ervaring achter de rug. Ik heb mezelf ook beter leren kennen. Hiervoor had ik nog geen enkele ervaring met klanten, offertes en verkoop. Nu weet ik zeker dat ik hierin wil verdergaan in de toekomst.

Do you have a personal interest in travel sales and the world of touroperating? Nordic is the perfect internship for this. I was well trained and mentored by a top team of professionals, all of whom are passionate about their jobs.

Werken als astronaut in Barcelona

Als laatste jaar student(e) Toerisme- en Recreatiemanagement eindig je met misschien wel het moeilijkste deel van heel de opleiding, niet bedrijfsmanagement 3, maar een stageplek zoeken. Hieronder lees je hoe ik mijn ideale stageplek heb gevonden en de tijd van mijn leven heb gehad in Barcelona.

At the beginning of the year, you get a lesson dedicated to the internship of the second semester. Like most students, I think “oh that’s far away, I still have a lot of time”, but unfortunately, due to the bachelor thesis, exams and other assignments, there was not as much time as I had previously thought. Once the time started to run out, I contacted everyone for an internship abroad. As a tourism student, it seems logical to me that you would like to spend some time abroad and get a taste of everything the education has to offer. When I’m on the train, on my way to take an exam, I receive the great news that there is an internship position for me in Barcelona. With great joy, I schedule an online interview, for which I am eventually hired by the company Barcelonatips.

Barcelonatips is a company that mainly focuses on all Dutch-speaking tourists who want to make a trip to Barcelona. As an intern, I am responsible for the marketing, especially the social media content, bookings, assisting in current projects, writing articles, coding in WordPress and much more. On my first day, I am flooded with all this information and get to work right away. At first, you are thrown to the lions, but this is only advantageous, as this is the best and fastest way to learn.

We springen vooruit in de tijd, de eerste weken zijn aanpassen maar gaan me goed af. Halverwege de stage heb ik mijn draai helemaal gevonden, doe ik al mijn taken zelfstandig en spring ik bij waar hulp nodig is. Zo kan je op de foto een voorbeeld zien waar ik voor mijn stage moet gaan filmen voor de social media platvormen. Samen met mijn bazin lijken we klaar om als astronauten te vertrekken naar Mars.


Barcelonatips is een enorm atypisch bedrijf door de vrijheid die je er hebt. Je wordt er geweldig warm ontvangen en krijgt alle nodige uitleg, maar erna is het aan jou. Je moet jezelf bewijzen en tonen dat je zelfstandig goed te werk kan gaan. Indien je een vraag hebt kan je die natuurlijk altijd aan iedereen stellen dankzij de familiale sfeer die er hangt. Naast de stage heb ik ook kennis gemaakt met mensen vanuit alle hoeken van de wereld, waarmee ik wekelijks leuke dingen mee ga doen. Als student toerisme is het natuurlijk een vereiste om alles van de stad te ontdekken.

Een buitenlandse stage is een sprong in het diepe, omdat je niet goed weet wat te verwachten. Maar als je het mij vraagt is het een evidente keuze voor iedere toerisme student(e). Het is een heerlijke ervaring waarbij je ontzettend veel bijleert, je wereldbeeld verruimt, zelfstandiger wordt, uit je comfortzone stapt en ook enkele maanden ten volle van het leven kan genieten. Zo wil ik dan ook mijn blogbericht afsluiten met een mooie quote van mijn Italiaanse kamergenoot.

– THE BALATON TRIP –

J’ai eu la possibilité de contribuer au Balaton trip, un voyage de 7 jours au Balaton Sound festival qui se déroule en Hongrie, auquel j’ai pu participer cet été. Une très belle expérience !



First and foremost, I thought it was a great opportunity that I was invited to join and this because I was responsible for all the marketing and communication for this summer project. And let’s just say that seeing it in the flesh is always more enjoyable and more enriching, because that way you can see how everything operates behind the scenes, which is something you don’t always get to witness.

We departed by bus in the direction of Balaton, I was responsible for keeping the animation on the bus alive and making sure everything went smoothly, the check-in of the participants, loading of the suitcases and the communication on the bus were all part of my job. Fortunately, I was able to do this together with Mie, a super enthusiastic girl who was more at home in the area as she accompanies us every year to help out because she is part of service du soleil, a volunteer legion of route du soleil.

The adventure began immediately when we arrived in Hungary. After unloading the suitcases, it was my job to check in at the campsite.
I had to give the participants a bracelet and inform them about the setting up of the tent and about all the facilities on the campsite. It was busy and intense, but this was immediately remedied by the good-humoured participants and the nice atmosphere that was created right from the start.


Le Balaton Trip, avait sa propre stage sur le terrain du Balaton où se passait le grand festival et cela avec des DJs belges de notre pays. Une super occasion de faire grandir la route du soleil!

Le camping du Balaton Trip était équipé d’une ‘stage’ de camping où des DJs jouaient tous les jour pour garder une bonne ambiance. Le camping avait également plusieurs emplacements où les festivaliers pouvaient se rendre. Il y avait un bar, un bureau du soleil, un bureau des urgences et même une coiffeuse, très chouette !

The days were always fully planned for our Balatonners, the way we call them! Every day we had a line-up of DJs playing the best records and tunes throughout the day, and there was also a fun activity on the programme daily, such as a boat trip, a city trip to Budapest or self-organised things at the campsite such as a fun water slide or an organised church party!
Being bored was definitly not on the menu

Quotidiennement, je devais me rendre au bureau du soleil, un bureau qui s’occupait des affaires pratiques du festival. Vous pouviez y aller pour louer un casier, pour réserver les activités que nous organisions et pour d’autres questions que les festivaliers se posaient, etc.

J’avais aussi la tâche d’écrire un journal chaque jour en indiquant ce que nous allions faire ce jour-là et le programme de la journée. Maintenir les médias sociaux en vie faisait également partie de mon rôle, en créant du contenu sur la page Instagram en écrivant des histoires et des posts avec de belles photos tous les jours.

J’avais également une permanence 2 fois par semaine, ce qui signifie que je devais surveiller le camping avec une autre personne et voir si tout allait bien sur le camping et s’il y avait des difficultés.

After the shift, I had the opportunity to see Balaton’s performances and DJ sets for myself. As I am a big fan of music, it was a great opportunity for me to be able to experience this. I have seen a lot of dj’s of which I am a big fan of, such as Paul kalkbrenner, Jamie Jones, Ben Bohmer and many more!

It was a wonderful journey, I met a lot of lovely people and that made working on Balaton more pleasurable. The group of people was very close. Because the atmosphere was so good, it didn’t feel like work at all. Balaton sound will definitely see me again next year!

Eén jaar later…

Eén jaar heb ik de stage bij TUI moeten uitstellen wegens covid, en nog was ik niet voorbereid op hoe hard ik hiervan zou genieten. Ik voelde dat ik het heel erg heb gemist om weer in het buitenland te werken in de vakantiesfeer en nieuwe mensen te leren kennen en nieuwe ervaringen op te doen. Ik hou er zelf van om op vakantie te gaan en andere landen te ontdekken dus ik doe niets liever dan mensen helpen om hun vakantie zo onvergetelijk mogelijk te maken. Ik heb al vaker gewerkt in het buitenland en in toerisme maar nog nooit als hotelrep. Er komt zoveel meer bij kijken dan ik had verwacht. Ons doel is natuurlijk om omzet te maken en goede CSQ’s (Customer Service Questionnaire) te leveren maar dit is niet alles. Wij staan in voor de klachtenbehandeling, contacten tussen hotel en TUI, verkoop van excursies, medische ongevallen, enz. Hoe mooi en leuk het allemaal ook klinkt het is zeker geen gemakkelijke job en de werkplaats verlaten betekend niet dat je klaar bent met werken. This job is more than just a nine to five job, we are here to give the guests the best experience possible. A normal day would look like this. When we arrive at the hotel we start with the walkies, which is going around the hotel and sliding an invitation for our highlights meeting under the doors of our new arrivals. By the time we finish the walkies and we arrive back to our desks often there are already guests waiting for us to assist them so we sit at our desk and help out our guests one by one. The cases we would then get would be regarding transfer times from the airport to the hotel, complaints about the hotel, information about the hotel or excursions, lost suitcases, etc. After this between 10.00 -12.00 we hold our highlights meeting which means we are with not so many people at our desk, and it is often then that guests are queuing in line. Once this is finished, we have a lunch break and in the afternoon we often work on the complaints and cases we received in the morning since the rush is only in the morning and the afternoon is a bit more quiet. Once we leave the hotel we still have to check or teams and tims (messages from the TUI app) in the evening to see if there are no changes for excursions the day after or to see if there are no urgent cases we need to deal with. Dit is voor on seen ‘normale’ werkdag het is heel beknopt uitgelegd maar het is diepgaander dan hier beschreven en het is heel belonend en ik heb een hele leuke team aan mijn zijde staan en daarom kom ik dagelijks naar het hotel met een glimlach.

Disfrutar de la vida en Mucho Gusto Ibiza !

Trouwen in het buitenland, voor velen een ultieme droom ? Ik mocht gedurende 16 weken meehelpen met het organiseren van verschillende fantastische evenementen en dromen laten uitkomen in het idyllische Ibiza. Deze stageplek was voor mij een unieke ervaring waar ik geen seconde spijt van heb gehad ! Lees hieronder meer over mijn bijzondere avontuur in Ibiza.

Finding a suitable internship that completely suits you seems like an almost impossible task. I understand it like nobody else… This year, more than ever, I was driven to find an internship in the country where I feel at my best, Spain!

Maar liefst 26 mails met verschillende motivaties naar diverse bedrijven over heel Spanje, heeft het me gekost om uiteindelijk terecht te komen bij Mucho Gusto op Ibiza. Een keuze die ervoor gezorgd heeft dat ik nu 16 weken later een rugzak vol geluksmomenten en ervaringen rijker ben.

But back to the beginning for a moment. Three years ago, I never would have imagined and dreamed that I would leave all by myself for 16 weeks abroad. This year I completely stepped out of my comfort zone. I will never forget the moment that I finally received a positive response in my mailbox from Ronald, owner of event agency Mucho Gusto Ibiza. A digital job interview quickly followed in which I could explain why I wanted to work for Mucho Gusto. 

Vanaf het eerste sollicitatiegesprek voelde ik al een klik met het bedrijf. Toen ik te horen kreeg van school dat alles was goedgekeurd,was het eindelijk dan zover. Ik ging helemaal in mijn eentje werken voor een evenementenbureau gespecialiseerd in bruiloften.

I immediately felt welcomed into the lovely team at Mucho Gusto. It was quickly made clear to me that you are not just an intern but an important part of the team. Of course the first two weeks were a bit of an adjustment, but soon I discovered my place on this beautiful island.




Maar jullie vragen je zeker en vast af hoe het is om voor een evenementenbureau in het buitenland te werken ? Gedurende 16 weken lang heb ik het reilen en zeilen van het vak geleerd. Mijn takenpakket was zeer divers. Ik mocht verschillende draaiboeken van A tot Z samenstellen. Hierin staat alle informatie van de grote dag tot in de kleinste details beschreven. Daarnaast ben ik op de meest prachtigste en unieke event- en trouwlocaties van Ibiza geweest. Hier was ik het aanspreekpunt voor het personeel, leveranciers en de gasten. Ik kreeg veel verantwoordelijkheid van Mucho Gusto en mocht verschillende evenementen volledig zelf plannen en regelen. Deze job vereist een oog voor detail en veel discipline.

Not only did working abroad surprised me but also the new people and environment you end up in. 

I would recommend this experience to all my fellow students. Take the plunge and let yourself be surprised by this amazing and educational adventure!

“Tui Team North on Catamaran”

Hola, Buenas! I’m Zeynep, student in the third year of Tourism and Leisure Management and I did a 4 month internship with Tui as a hotel rep in Mallorca. In this blog post, I’ll give an insight into how I experienced my internship with Tui Abroad and what I learned from it.

Tui is one of the biggest and leading travel organisation operator of Europe and it stands for Travel, Unique and Inspiring. 

The best part of this job is when you look at my instagram you would think I am on vacation all season. To be honest little yes and little no. I often hear from friends “what a great job, you are always on vacation”. They don’t realize how patient you have to be when engaging with tourists. Supporting something you actually have no control over and many stressful situations. A small example is that we have 1.5 days off, which is not always “off” because you still have to do something for work. Of course you have many choices when planning your day off such as going on unlimited excursions, exploring the island, meeting new people, cleaning up your apartment or maybe resting? For me, the choice is simple and the result is eternal fatigue?.

Başından beri bağımsız çalışabildiğim ve çok güvenildiğim için çok şey öğrendim. Sanırım staj yapmak için kendime daha uygun bir organizasyon seçemezdim: bazen alışılmadık çalışma şekli, bağımsızlık, anlayış ve positif zihniyet. 

Stajım sırasında yeni insanlarla ilişkiler kurdum, tüm yaşam ortamım değişiyor ama aynı zamanda doğum günleri, düğünler aile ve arkadaşlarımın hayatındaki önemli olayları kaçırdım. Ama evet, bu güzel adada staj yapmak, yeni kültürleri keşfetmek ve yeni seyler ögrenmek bu işin getirdiği rahatsızlığı gideriyor. Sonunda buna değer olduğunu kalbimin derinliklerinden söyleyebilirim. bir ömür boyu yanımda taşıyacağım bir deneyim. 

My apprenticeship with TUI was a personal investment for my individual development. In summary, I can say that the time in Mallorca was incredibly valuable for me, because in addition to my daily work as a hotel representative, I made inspiring contacts, got to know other cultures, improved my language skills and benefitted from a better quality of life.

I did it!!!

Iedereen die mij kent, weet dat ik heel erg bang ben van hoogte. Sinds ik klein ben, heb ik last van hoogte vrees. Ik doe niks die met hoogte te maken heeft, behalve vliegen! Skybars zijn leuk en gezellig maar ik verkies normale bars, Ik word zenuwachtig en kan niet van de sunset genieten of op mijn gemak zijn. 

It was Saturday 06/08/22, my day off. My colleague Marleen calls me to let me know that we were invited by Torstan of Life&Sea to do Parasailing. My first reaction was laughing and then asking her if she was kidding. Before I could say  yes of no, she said I said yes, it will be fun! We need to try new things and see what our guests are experiencing. I said, fine. Let’s do it!  I had to give myself a pep talk, I had to prepare myself and just go for it. I wanted to look for videos of people doing parasailing, but that would have been a terrible idea. I watched Netflix, got ready and drove to Calo des Moro with Marleen. To relax and have a nice afternoon on the beach. 

Time really flew by and all of the sudden it was time to drive back to Arenal and go to life and sea. We get our life jackets, get on the boat and guess what? We are the first to go. My heart starts racing, I tie my hair back and put on a brave face. The crew were explaining everything, but I couldn’t listen to a word they were saying. We were told to sit down, I close my eyes and up we go. 

Parasailing

Het enige wat ik kon horen , was mijn collega Marleen die het uitzicht aan het bewonderen was. Zij bleef herhalen hoe mooi het was en wat zij allemaal kon zien. Ik begon nieuwsgierig te worden en heb stilletjes mijn ogen opengedaan. Marleen had gelijk, het uitzicht was prachtig. We kon den alles zien, maar alles leek zo klein. At en toe moest Ik mijn ogen terug dichtdoen. Na 5 minuten was ik niet meer bang. We hebben foto’s genomen, gezongen en genieten van het uitzicht. 

Parasailing

I was proud of myself and I would definitely do it again and recommend everyone to do it! This doesn’t mean that I would jump out of a plain. Parasailing was a big big step for me. 

North Atlantic Natives: whales, dolphins and other ocean critters

De radio kraakt en zucht en met een vlotte handbeweging draait Pedro de volumeknop helemaal open. Risso glijdt moeiteloos door de golven van de Noord-Atlantische oceaan en het opspattende water laat zoutvlekken achter op onze waterdichte jassen.

De ruwweg acht meter lange grijs-witte zodiac dankt zijn naam aan de Risso’s dolfijn (Grampus griseus); een gemakkelijk identificeerbare dolfijnsoort die grijs geboren wordt, maar door sociaal gedrag met soortgenoten van bek tot staart vol komt te staan met allerlei witte littekens. Na ruim een uur varen, vertraagt de boot tot een kleine twee knopen. Pedro, manager en kapitein van Azores Experiences gebaart met zijn wijs- en middelvinger naar zijn ogen om ze dan met een cirkelbeweging in de lucht te steken; we zijn aangekomen in het gebied waar de vigia de walvis voor het laatst zag.

The vigias or lookouts are our eyes on the island’s highest points. With their immense binoculars, they scan the horizon for water splashes, fins, shadows and any other sign on or under the surface that may indicate the presence of cetaceans. Their trained eyes were once used to guide boatmen to baleen whales that they could hunt. After whaling came to a halt in the Azores in the late 1980s, many vigias moved into the field of maritime tourism where their handy skill is now used to great effect.

De kalmte voor de storm is begonnen. De zee is rustig vandaag en scoort maar net een twee op twaalf op de schaal van Beaufort. De Noord-Atlantische oceaan ziet eruit als een terug opengevouwen stuk verfrommeld papier en al lachend vertelt oceanograaf en gids Marta de klanten aan boord dat het nu een kwestie is van whale waiting in plaats van whale watching. Behendig positioneer ik mijn blote voeten achter elkaar op de rubberen zijkant van de ribboot en met mijn rechterhand zoek ik steun tegen het bootraam. Mijn ogen volgen de horizon van bakboord naar stuurboord en terug en speuren aandachtig het wateroppervlak af.

“If a whale surfaces at, say, two o’clock,” Marta explains during the safety briefing in the harbour, “it means that you have to look to the northeast if you want to see the animal.” Before leaving the port of Horta, this clock system is explained to those on board to make the position of the animals clear to everyone, no matter where one is on board. Basic information such as the requirement to keep on the life jacket, staying seated when the boat is moving fast and indicating when your breakfast or lunch is no longer in its place in your stomach are also given during this safety briefing. In the meantime, I deftly fetch the three fenders on board, start the GPS and simultaneously the data collection, and we sail out of the picturesque harbour of Horta at a steady eight knots.

‘BALEIA AZUL!’, galmt het opeens krakend op de radio. In de verte zijn de restanten te zien van een wel zes meter hoge ademnevel en met een scherpe ruk aan het roer zet Risso koers richting het zuiden. Nu moet alles snel gaan. Aan ruim drieëntwintig knopen scheurt de ribboot over het wateroppervlak en nog geen minuut later volgt een tweede ademnevel, dit keer op slechts honderd meter van de boot. “Blue whale, 11 o’clock!”, roept Pedro enthousiast. Ik strek mijn arm uit richting 11 uur en in het verlengde van mijn vingertoppen steekt een relatief kleine, grijzige rugvin boven de golven uit. De dertien hoofden op de boot draaien haastig dezelfde kant op en een wel dertig meter lange lichtblauwe schaduw onder het wateroppervlak verraadt dat we hier te maken hebben met het grootste dier dat ooit op deze aarde heeft geleefd.

“The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), blauwe vinvis, baleia azul or baleine bleue belongs to the baleen whale family and uses triangular-shaped baleen plates made out of keratin to filter food like krill out of the water”, I explain during the briefing on land, not knowing that an hour later we would be cruising side by side with this mighty creature. Before we depart, customers are given a brief explanation of the different species of cetaceans that we might encounter during our voyage. When there are no more questions, Pedro shares the information from the lookouts with the guests and everyone is equipped with waterproof trousers, jackets and life jackets with newly replaced CO2 cartridges.

38.2 Zeemijlen, vier uur, twaalf Tuimelaars (Tursiops truncatus), twee Potvissen (Physeter macrocephalus), wel vijftig Gewone dolfijnen (Delphinus delphis), honderden Kuhls Pijlstormvogels (Calonectris borealis), enkele Visdieven (Sterna hirundo) een onechte karetschildpad (Caretta caretta) en een blauwe vinvis (Balaenoptera musculus) later ligt Risso weer aangemeerd in de kleurrijk versierde haven van Horta en staan we terug aan land. I have always had a fear of failure and performance anxiety. Fears, that I have tried to banish more than once in life. Fears, that feel very conflicting, because they contradict my passion to share my experiences and thoughts with the people around me. I feel excited and have so much to share. I love conversations and interactions, but once I am on stage all the sounds turn into a monotonous beep, the spotlights burn in my eyes and my mouth feels as dry as the desert. Cold sweat breaks out and my feet are nailed to the ground.

Ontelbare keren, probeerde ik deze angsten te verjagen. Als kind probeerde ik dit op musical- en theaterkampen en nam alsook deel aan Griekse volksdansvoorstellingen in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in Brussel. Ik probeerde echt te leren om me comfortabel te voelen voor een publiek.

Still, the presentations and performances were what gave me sleepless nights. After the bachelor thesis presentations, I had almost resigned myself to the fact that presenting was something I was quite good at but would never really enjoy doing. Never would I have dreamed that after 23 years I would be able to push these limits and this on Portuguese grounds.

Ik heb mezelf nog nooit zo voelen groeien als tijdens mijn stage bij ESN Porto. Als ik terugkijk op de afgelopen vier maanden, sta ik versteld van hoeveel ik veranderd ben. Buitenlandse uitwisselingen en stages staan erom bekend studenten uit hun comfortzone te halen. Ik had dit al ervaren tijdens mijn tien maanden durende uitwisseling in 2020-2021, maar na deze stage geloof ik nog meer in de magie die de stad Porto met zich meedraagt.

To say that my tasks as office and trips intern were varied is an understatement. Not only was I responsible for the management of the ESN office, but I was also allowed to carry out various creative and research-oriented tasks within the vibrating trips department. The purpose of ESN Porto is to guide international students and give them the best experience of their life during their exchange.

Zo heb ik bijvoorbeeld een groep van 60 internationale studenten gedurende een weekend in Lissabon mogen begeleiden. Het rondleiden van de studenten door de stad en het doorgeven van de passie voor reizen was een unieke ervaring die mij verplichtte mijn eigen angsten om voor publiek te spreken te verleggen.

The most defining moment for me happened in Porto. We visited two secondary schools where we gave presentations on the topic of mobility, the various exchanges, and our own experiences. I never thought I would dare to speak in front of groups of more than 90 students, but the moment I stood on the stage, my passion took over. I forgot my fright, the lights and the sounds and was overwhelmed by the desire to share my experiences and in this way encourage the scholars to participate in an exchange. I realized how much I loved doing this, promoting, motivating, and spreading happiness.
