Have you ever wondered how an exhibition is made? We have all been to a couple of exhibitions, whether you are an avid museum visitor or just because you had to for school. However, you have probably never thought about the process behind that exhibition. At least, I have never thought about it, until a few months ago, when I started my apprenticeship. Join me, as I will tell you about the creation of new exhibitions.

A couple of months ago, I started my apprenticeship in Archeocentrum Velzeke. This small institution has a permanent exhibition as well as a couple of temporary exhibitions. In March 2022, there will be a new, temporary exhibition about Aviation. I worked on this project during my apprenticeship under the department “Publiekswerking”, so I will mainly talk about the tasks that this department completes in preparation for an exhibition. In reality, there are many people who work on an exhibition behind the scenes.

In short, preparing for an exhibition can be summarized as follows: books, books and books. Naturally, desk research is the most important step when preparing for an exhibition. The first and most important step is gathering as many facts as possible and checking them. All these facts are then put in a timeline. This timeline is also important for the tour guides.

Vervolgens worden er feiten geselecteerd die mogelijks in de tentoonstelling komen. Hierbij is kennis over de ruimte waarin de tentoonstelling komt heel belangrijk. Op een plattegrond wordt de tentoonstelling uitgetekend. Vervolgens gaan deze feiten naar de graficus die een eerste versie van de tijdlijn maakt. Het is normaal dat er daarna nog meer feiten worden weggefilterd. De plaatsing van de tijdlijn is cruciaal, zeker in tijden van corona. We willen opstoppingen voorkomen dus het is belangrijk dat de feiten goed verdeeld zijn over de ruimte, maar ook snel te lezen zijn en in het oog springen.

Verder zijn er nog andere teams die werken aan een tentoonstelling. Zo heb je bijvoorbeeld het team van archeologen dat het wrak van een oorlogsvliegtuig zal opgraven voor deze tentoonstelling, maar ook de medewerkers van het die objecten selecteren. Ook de technische medewerkers die de tentoonstellingsruimte zullen opbouwen zijn niet te missen.

Er komt dus duidelijk meer kijken bij het maken van een tentoonstelling. Het is kritisch denken. Een tentoonstelling maken is een karwei waar goed samenwerken optimaal is. Een museum loopt achter de schermen als een machine. Het is meer dan objecten in een vitrine plaatsen.

Already during the first week of my internship at guide organization Vizit I got a task that, for me, is one of the biggest tasks in the guiding sector. I was asked to help making a new route in Brussels, more specifically in the European Quarter. This route was going to be a virtual route, during Covid nobody was allowed to follow guided tours. Thus, Vizit created tours that people could follow from their homes. I was overjoyed with this task, because I could discover a new neighbourhood in Brussels and all my creative ideas could be released by making this route. This journey started with a lot of computer work, I first needed to gain a great deal of information about the history of the neighbourhood. I really liked digging up the old and crazy stories and sometimes it even felt like I went back in time. I discovered stories of the first train ride in Belgium and how former King Leopold I incognito was during this train ride. Or a story of a rich man who lived in the European Quarter and died because during a flight he thought he went to the bathroom, but he actually took the door leading him out of the plane.

Grâce à ces histoires comiques j’ai été intriguée par ce quartier et quand j’ai eu toutes les informations je suis allée au quartier dans le but de voir ces bâtiments et de sentir l’environnement moi-même. Arrivée au Quartier Européen j’ai commencé à faire des vidéos pour la visite virtuelle. Mon premier arrêt était la statue de l’industriel John Cockerill. Cette statue a également beaucoup souffert de l’iconoclasme décolonisateur actuel. Après ce petit revers j’ai continué mon chemin au parlement imposant. Grâce au soleil radieux les vidéos de cet arrêt sont très jolis. Aussi les autres arrêts étaient beaux, c’était très agréable de voir avec mes propres yeux toutes les choses que j’avais recherchées. Le tournage était aussi un vrai défi, je n’ai aucune expérience en IT donc selon moi toutes les vidéos sont bien réussies.  

The filming in Brussels was nearly done, only one stop was left, the embassy of Spain. This embassy is located in one of the oldest buildings in the Quarter, thus it was a great stop because the story here was a good way to end the whole tour. But the guard of the embassy though otherwise. I started filming the façade of the building and then I started walking closer towards the door with the sign of the embassy. I thought the filming was done, but suddenly the door of the embassy went open. A woman stepped outside and asked me what I was doing, I explained that I was making a tour in de neighbourhood and that I needed to film some buildings. She asked me if she could see the footage and after she saw it she promptly asked me to deleted the video.

Après toutes les recherches et le tournage, les mesures de Covid étaient détendues. Par conséquent le tour dans le Quartier Européen n’a jamais été utilisé. Mais tout mon travail n’est pas pour rien parce que l’année prochain je peux commencer à travailler chez Vizit et donc je peux finir mon travail et créer mon propre tour à Bruxelles.

Na een verdomd lastig coronajaar kwam ik zondagavond 28 februari toe in mijn huisje. De volgende ochtend werd ik wakker met vogelgefluit, klaar voor mijn eerste werkdag. Voor mij was dit de start van een (toen nog) eindeloze stage.

Mijn mentale gezondheid was alles behalve oké. Eigenlijk was ik mentaal niet in staat om aan deze stage te beginnen. Maar ik kon en ik wou dit niet loslaten. Met een energiepijl onder 0,  besloot ik te proberen mijn laatste jaar Toerisme -en Recreatiemanagement aan de Erasmushogeschool in Brussel tot een mooi einde te brengen. Nog 16 weken, Celine, dan ben je er vanaf.

My internship role is described as follows: I work in support of the Assistant Operations Manager and the Deputy General Manager. Once a week, on changeover days, I support the reception desk. My first two weeks at Center Parcs De Vossemeren were filled with a familiarisation programme. The intention was that I would get to know every department within Operations this way. I helped out at the reception desk, information desk, Cycle Center, Shops, Central Office and Children’s Farm. After these two weeks, my internship started ‘for real’.

Wat volgde was een van de beste leerervaringen uit mijn leven. Door de veelzijdigheid van deze stage, heb je de kans om op enorm veel vlakken bij te leren. Geen enkele dag, week of maand ziet er hier hetzelfde uit. Ik ben bezig met het verwerken van kwaliteitscijfers en feedbackfiles, denk na over nieuwe activiteiten, voer kwaliteitscontroles uit, volg meetings mee, bereid werkoverleggen voor en notuleer, help mee aan de receptie + infobalie en neem alles aan wat de Assistent Operations Manager of Deputy General Manager mij aanreikt. Dit kan gaan van het volledig uitwerken van een nieuwe activiteit en zorgen voor de manuals, het uittesten van de vernieuwde bowlingbaan met de andere stagiaires tot het opmaken van een e-learning voor medewerkers in verband met het handelen in noodsituaties aan de hand van het bedrijfsnoodplan. Voor deze stage kan je niet alles dan flexibel zijn, maar dit is net mijn sterkte.

Center Parcs De Vossemeren, a name and place that until 16 weeks ago, meant little to nothing to me. In the meantime, it already feels like a ‘second home’ here.

After a long search in the then still hellish battle against the coronavirus, I ended up at Summer Bash. Here you will discover a bit more about my internship adventure at Summer Bash.

Summer Bash?

Laten we beginnen met een kleine introductie. Wel, Summer Bash is één van de grootste jongeren(reis)organisaties van ons land met een groot hart voor jongeren en met het doel hen een onvergetelijke reis te bezorgen. Summer Bash werd enkele jaren geleden opgericht door een paar hechte vrienden en is in slechts enkele jaren tijd uitgegroeid tot één grote Summer Bash Family. Summer Bash is meer dan een reisorganisatie die jongerenreizen organiseert, iedereen maakt deel uit van hun verhaal, zowel jongeren, als ‘den office’, monitoren,…, iedereen! Een warm gevoel dat ik kan beamen vanaf de 1^e secondes dat ik het kantoor binnenwandelde!

What and where

My internship took place in the cozy Summer Bash office at the bustling Ossemarkt, in the middle of the student district of Antwerp. Together with 3 other interns I started an interesting and instructive internship. As a future ’travel consultant’ I was responsible for handling requests and bookings, finding new suppliers, preparing the new winter season, updating the website, … . In addition to working, there was also space to bond with the other interns. During our internship we were allowed to redecorate together the entire basement into a work- & meetingplace.

Het begin van een nieuw avontuur

Summer Bash zou niet hetzelfde zijn zonder het gedreven monitorenteam. Na verschillende opleidingsdagen, mag ik trots zeggen dat ik deel uitmaak van het monitorenteam. Deze zomervakantie stap ik als moni in een nieuw avontuur en kan je me spotten als monitor in Lloret de Mar en Malta.

Deze stage was meer dan ‘Legendary’! Na deze 16-weken lange periode ben ik dan ook blij dat dit slechts het begin is van mijn ‘Journey’ op ‘den bureau’ van Summer Bash.

Op 19 april begin ik mijn stage in het toeristisch kantoor van Antwerpen. Eerder deed ik al stage aan de receptie van een hotel en een reisbureau maar dat was niets vergeleken met deze 9 weken. Ik schrijf deze tekst in mijn laatste week en ik moet zeggen, ik heb enorm veel bijgeleerd. Met deze tekst probeer ik een beeld te vormen wat ik zoal heb kunnen doen.

Op 3 plaatsen speelt mijn stage zich af, namelijk in het toeristisch kantoor en de stadswinkel op de Grote Markt en het kantoor in het Centraal Station. In de stadswinkel verkopen we spullen en souvenirs die sterk verbonden zijn met de stad. Denk aan bieren, gadgets, chocolade, boeken,… In de toeristische kantoren krijg ik naargelang het einde nadert, meer en meer buitenlanders over de vloer. In het begin was het vooral Wallonië, Nederland en Vlaanderen. Later kwamen de Fransen, Duitsers Spanjaarden en Portugezen respectievelijk ook langs.

There are all sorts of things I can do while working for the city. Such as visiting the musea our city offers or welcoming customers and selling our products. Everytime my mentor sends me to a museum, I experience the museum with a critical point of view. For example, I ask myself: “does the museum think about the elder, youngsters and the physically disabled”.

When I’m not strolling through the city streets or visiting musea I am learning and reading about Antwerp. I keep track of all the activities and events there are and which new expositions arrived. We get all sorts of questions here so you’ll get wiser and wiser by the day.

I developed myself on a professional level but sadly my biggest expectation on improving my languages didn’t quite go as planned. Because of the pandemic, we didn’t encounter as many foreigners in our office I initially hoped for.

At last, I was able to observe how different personalities acted towards visitors but also how they treat colleagues. You constantly have to adjust to the visitors. Sometimes you need to speak very loud to lead a conversation, then there are moments where you have to rapidly explain things and help people in the busy moments. And then you have people who you need to be extremely patient with.

Overall, I highly recommend working or doing an internship at one of the visit.flanders offices!

Het grootste deel van mijn stage bracht ik door op het kantoor van Beyond Borders in Herentals. Wat fijn om tijdens mijn voorlaatste stageweek eens van omgeving te veranderen, wat frisse Ardense lucht in te ademen en mezelf te omringen met een actieve en avontuurlijke groep mensen. Expeditie d’Ardennes was een mooie afsluiter van de stage.

De finale: afsluiter van de expeditie.

Actie, avontuur, competitie en een bruisende groepssfeer zijn de ingrediënten van de Expeditie d’Ardennes van Beyond Borders. Tijdens deze vierdaagse in de Ardennen strijden 8 duo’s tegen elkaar in de meest uitdagende proeven. Ze verleggen hun eigen grenzen, testen hun band als duo en ontmoeten gelijkgezinden rond het kampvuur. Een intense, unieke en onvergetelijke ervaring.

We waren met een team van 4 om deze vierdaagse in goede banen te leiden. Ik was in het gezelschap van Ellen, een goedlachse en warmhartige vrijwilligster van Beyond Borders en Casper en Jesper, twee stoere kerels die de ganse maand mei hebben geleefd (of overleefd) op het domein en bijna alle edities van Expeditie d’Ardennes hebben begeleid als stage voor hun opleiding. Een nieuwe wereld ging voor me open tijdens deze vierdaagse. Een wereld van complexe puzzels, weldoordachte denkoefeningen en stevige fysieke proeven. Changement de décor: van indoor naar outdoor.

I have to say it was an unforgettable experience – freezing from head to toes in my little tent included. I got to know the most energetic people I’ve ever met. Never could I do what they did in those 4 days. Before Expeditie d’Ardennes, I considered myself an active person. After, compared to these vigorous participants, I felt like a total couch potato! Running through the woods, mountain biking, kayaking, crossing the river with clothes on, making fire, … And all of that in a competition, as fast as possible!

During these four intense days, I discovered another dimension of adventure. I also realized that adventure and being ‘adventurous’ can mean something totally different to another person. An adventure is never the same thing for two different people. But one isn’t better or cooler than the other.

Discovering this and learning which type of adventurous people were participating, gave me an interesting insight. After spending a lot of time in the back office where I was in contact with customers on a daily basis, I now got an even clearer understanding of the target audience of Beyond Borders. I realized that meeting your clients in real life, talking to them and getting to know them in person is crucial for your business, no matter what industry you are in.
