A Place Called Home

Brussels Airport, a place where thousands of people come and go everyday and a place many call home.

You might think: “Such places can be found everywhere”, only this is not just your ordinary place. It is a place where daily, people can find joy and at the same time sadness. Sadness for saying goodbye to loved ones or sadness for missing a flight. Joy to go on holiday and start a new adventure or joy for returning home to loved ones.
And that is what the airport is to many: a place where they feel at home.

When we’re on holiday and enter the airplane, we say: “Let’s go home”.
Whether we’re coming back from a city trip in London, a family holiday in Greece, a business trip in Tokyo or an exchange program in Spain, the first place we always come back to is Brussels Airport.

For most of my life I have been what they like to call an “Aviation Geek”. The word Aviation to us geeks means so much more than just airplanes and flying. It involves every aviation topic. Since I was young I wanted to work for an international airline at an airport and be in contact with people traveling all around the world. Earlier this year I finally got the opportunity to start an internship for the biggest Belgian airline company Brussels Airlines. I would be trained to become a Passenger Service Agent.

Ik werk nu al bijna 4 maanden op de luchthaven en niet zo lang geleden kwam er een vraag in me op: “Is deze job een waargemaakte droom voor een Aviation Geek?” Het antwoord op deze vraag is “ja”.

Elke dag kom ik werken en ben ik het eerste contact voor de klant. Het eerste gezicht dat de klant ziet. Dat de klant nu blij, verdrietig, vriendelijk of gestresseerd is, is het mijn job om hem/haar gerust te stellen en het gevoel te geven dat ik een luisterend oor biedt. Ik check de klant in voor zijn vlucht en omdat Brussels Airline’s slogan als volgt luidt: “We Go The Extra Smile”, stoort het mij nooit om extra hulp aan te bieden.

Passagiers inchecken klinkt op het eerste zicht niet zo boeiend, maar ik kan eerlijk zeggen dat ik elke dag nieuwe en unieke gevallen tegenkom. Elke dag is een uitdaging omdat ik nooit weet wat nog komt. De job blijft spannend en ik krijg nooit het gevoel dat ik urenlang hetzelfde doe.
Behalve inchecken zijn er natuurlijk nog andere taken, zoals assisteren aan de boarding van vluchten. Deze zorgt voor enorm veel afwisseling en maakt de job nog boeiender.

Although I have only been in my position for a couple of months, I feel like I haven’t had to work a single day of it. I thoroughly love this internship and am looking forward to what the future has in store.
