Our reporters go on press trips to explore new destinations and share unique experiences with our readers. Last week I had the chance to explore the Flemish region ‘het Brugse Ommeland’ for three days together with reporter Phebe. Our press trip was organised down to the last detail by the staff of Westtoer.
Onze persreis werd georganiseerd ter gelegenheid van de opening van het nieuwe toeristisch project “De middeleeuwen op je bord”. Een project van Westtoer en foodarcheoloog Jeroen Van Vaerenbergh dat je aan de hand van een interactieve fietstocht en heerlijke streekgerechten terugkatapulteert naar de middeleeuwen.
We had three days to explore this beautiful region. On a sunny Thursday morning, the director of the Zwin National Park, Ina De Wasch, gave us a warm welcome to ’the international airport for birds’. We were introduced to the interesting story of migratory birds and visited the interactive exhibition. During a guided tour through the Park and on the Zwin Plain, we learned more about the origins of the park and the various birds, animals and plants that are found here.
Guide Peter and director Ina also told us with pride about the many storks that return to the Zwin National Park in winter after their journey to the South. By means of small cameras placed on the backs of the storks, they can follow their journey here. This way, we don’t only learn about the dangers the storks encounter on their journey, but we also learn how far these birds travel. Last year, the stork Murshid even crossed the Sahara and reached Mali. This winter, he returned to his home port, the Zwin National Park.
Vrijdag trokken we er met de e-bike opuit in het Brugse Ommeland. Tijdens een toch van meer dan 60 kilometer kwamen we langs prachtige plekjes en maakten we ook kennis met de VR-kijkers. Langs de fietsroute van de ‘Verdwenen Zwinhavens’ staan verschillende VR-kijkers opgesteld. Het Brugse Ommeland was in de middeleeuwen gekend om zijn vele havens. De VR-kijkers vertellen je het verhaal van de middeleeuwse belangrijke zwinhavens van onder meer Damme en Sluis.
Daarnaast werden we ook via een culinaire weg meegenomen naar de middeleeuwen. Voor dit nieuwe toeristische project sloegen vele ondernemers uit het Brugse Ommeland de handen in elkaar en creërden nieuwe streekgerechten met producten die hier in de middeleeuwen reeds aanwezig waren dankzij de vele overzeëse handel. Foodarcheoloog Jeroen Van Vaerenbergh vertelde ons dat “deze hutsepot aan smaken” het verhaal van de ‘Verdwenen Zwinhavens’ prachtig samenvat. De handel leidde niet enkel tot een mengelmoes van culturen in deze streek, maar zorgde ook voor vele exotische invloeden in onze gerechten.
Thanks to this inspiring press trip, I didn’t only gain a lot of product knowledge about this beautiful region, but I also realized that the tourism sector in Belgium is so much more than one would think at a first glance.
This press trip has truly opened my eyes and reminded me once more why I want to work in the tourism sector with a lot of passion.
