The wide yet heavy door of the experience centre leads Sandrina and me inside. The adapted duo bike is parked outside in the rain. The small stairs next to the elevator for wheelchair users leads to the reception of the ’14 -’18 Experience Centre in Tildonk. You can hear my sodden shoes squeaking with every step I take. I look around in the room. Flyers, maps, a friendly man behind the counter and above all … a heater! I cannot resist the friendly offer to hang my wet shoes and clothes out to dry. Barefoot, I tripple through the experience centre to learn more about Tildonk during the First World War. After reading the poignant testimonies, Frans the receptionist offers us a nice hot cup of coffee that prepares us for again a wet bike ride back to the office.
Terugkijkend op de dag met het bezoekje aan het belevingscentrum samen met mijn stagebegeleidster, was dit de perfecte metafoor om mijn aankomst bij Toerisme Vlaams-Brabant te omschrijven. Uitgeregend en wat vermoeid na een onzeker coronajaar belandde ik in een warm bedrijf waar de nieuwe ervaringen als een warm kopje koffie mijn onderkoelde studentenzieltje verwarmde. En ook al liep ik niet dagelijks via de draaideur het provinciehuis binnen, de warmte van het team was steeds voelbaar tot bij mij thuis door het scherm van mijn laptop.
During my internship, I worked for two part-time positions. Half of each week I was in function of ’Iedereen Toerist’. The visit to the experience centre was, among other things, an assignment for this function. When is tourism and recreation accessible to everyone regardless of their physical/mental limitations or budget? What can be improved and what is still missing? In addition, I went out several times by bicycle to map out an accessible cycling route. The task that should make everyone jealous was also to get in touch with various donkey farms, alpaca farms and animal play farms. After all, who doesn’t enjoy cuddling these cute animals? Indeed, everyone! That’s why I looked into whether these places could be accessible to ANYONE.
De andere helft van mijn weken bij Toerisme Vlaams-Brabant werkte ik voor het team publieksinfo onder begeleiding van Robin. De grootste taken hiervoor waren het organiseren van de fotoshoots. Locaties vastleggen, fietsen huren, figuranten vinden, afspraken maken met de fotograaf, … het resultaat loont al de moeite. Je moest eens weten welke mooie locaties ik hiermee heb leren kennen! En dat allemaal in de provincie Vlaams-Brabant.
De afgelopen maanden waren enorm leerrijk en boeiend. Mijn geweldige stagebegeleiders en collega’s zorgden ervoor dat mijn stage bij de provincie een ervaring werd om nooit te vergeten. En nu, op naar de toekomst!
