From day one, I was involved in mapping all religious sites in Flanders and Brussels that had been given a new function for example, churches turned into libraries, cultural centers, or museums. It was interesting to see how heritage can be preserved while adapting to modern needs.

Another key focus of the internship was the Sint-Godelieve Abbey in Bruges, which will reopen in 2028 after being closed for over 400 years. Our job was to identify and reach out to potential partners for the site’s future role. We conducted interviews with organizations like Musea Brugge, the Bruges Triennial, TEJO, and Bourgogne des Flandres. These conversations gave us insight into what collaboration around heritage could look like creative, community-based, and future-oriented.

A definite highlight was our visit to the Winter Garden (Wintertuin) of the Ursuline Institute.
