It\u2019s 8 o\u2019 clock in the morning, we just had our coffee and Pedro is already on the phone with the lookouts. The spotters are sitting on land with their huge binoculars scanning the ocean surface for splashes, fins, shadows or any other sign of cetaceans of the Azores. Today we have a full boat with 14 tourists, which implicates that I will stay on land to cover the base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marta is halfweg haar briefing, die we dagelijks geven voor het vertrek, over de verschillende soorten walvisachtigen die we eventueel kunnen spotten tijdens de tocht. Plots onderbreekt Pedro haar, \u201cI am sorry we have to leave, the lookouts just told me they have good information\u2019. He gives his daily update about the sea \u201cIt\u2019s ruff and bumpy, it will not be comfortable and we will get wet, but of course it is safe to go out\u201d. So we provide everyone with waterproof jackets and pants and make them ready to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c9\u00e9n vrouw is geblesseerd aan haar been, dus besluit niet mee te komen omdat de zee te wild is. Dat wil zeggen dat ik toch mee kan op de boot. Even twijfel ik en zeg ik \u201cnee ik zal wel hier blijven, iemand moet de base open houden\u201d. Maar plots komt Marta in mijn oor fluisteren \u201cRani, we may have information about 2 Orcas\u201d. Mijn twijfel valt direct weg, ik pak mijn spullen en ren richting de boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risso, onze zodiac boot, vaart rustig de haven van Horta uit. Ondertussen zit ik hier al bijna 3 maand dus ken ik mijn taken aan boord. Ik bereid de datasheet voor, zet de gps aan en leg de gopro klaar. Na een half uurtje varen zie ik Pedro een subtiel cirkelgebaar maken met zijn vinger, dit wil zeggen dat we aangekomen zijn in de area van de walvissen en we extra moeten rondkijken. Marta probeert al heel de tocht haar enthousiasme te verbergen, maar met het idee dat ze haar lievelingsdieren zal zien vandaag, is dit niet gemakkelijk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hear her screaming \u201c9 o\u2019 clock\u201d, and all the heads of the people on board move to the left. And yes, I see it as well, a group of Orcas are surfing next to our boat. After watching the Orcas for a while, we leave to look for some Sperm whales.  Pedro puts as he calls it \u201cthe employer of the month\u201d or also known as the Hydrophone into the water. With this we can listen to the Sperm whales and try to localise  them. And yet again, the hydrophone is not letting us down, shortly thereafter we see the fluke of a Sperm whale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
